Response of the D0 Muon Chamber to changes in voltage, incident angle, gas composition, and oxygen contamination

Description: The measured space point resolution of a D0 Muon Chamber is /+-/0.31 mm perpendicular to the anode wire and 2.7 mm parallel to the wire. A voltage change of 1 kV, which changes the gas gain by a factor of 50, only causes a change of drift velocity of 12%. Tracks inclined of 45/degree/ have a resolution worse than those of 0/degree/ by a factor 3 /+-/ 2. A change in gas composition from CO/sub 2/(10%) to CO/sub 2/(11%) decreases the gas gain by 17 /+-/ 5%, and decreases drift velocity by 0.2 /+-… more

Tests of prototype SSC magnets

Description: Results are presented from tests of the first two full length prototype SSC dipole magnets. Magnetic field measurements have been made at currents up to 2000 A. The two magnets achieved peak currents at 4.5K of 5790 A and 6450 A, respectively, substantially below the short sample limit of 6700 A. These peak values, however, could not be achieved reproducibly. Data are presented from studies performed to try to understand the poor quench performance.

EC Driver - 41" Stroke Hydraulic Cylinder

Description: It was decided to use a hydraulic cylinder resting on the floor of the argon spill trough in the EC carriage to drive the EC's motion on the center beam. Space was limited due to the spill bellows and their required support and containment system. The 0.0. of the cylinder had to be limited to 3 to 3-1/2 inches, maximum. The weight of a wet EC and carriage is estimated to be 320 tons. The rolling coefficient of friction of the Tychoway rollers chosen to guide the EC and carriage along the harden… more

BPM System Improvements

Description: During the accelerator studies period of 12/90 through 1/91 the Accumulator BPM system was investigated in some detail in an effort to improve its reliability and accuracy in making closed orbit measurements. The motivation for this is to try and improve the beam energy resolution for E760. The relativistic {beta} of the {bar p} is given by {beta} = f{sub R}L/c where f{sub R} is the revolution frequency, L is the orbit length ({approx} 474050mm), and c is the speed of light. Hence, the error in… more

Searches for physics beyond the standard model in ttbar events

Description: The top quark is currently only observed at the Tevatron, where it is mainly produced in t{bar t} pairs. Due to the very high mass of the top quark compared to the other quarks and the gauge bosons, it is expected to play a special role in electroweak symmetry breaking. Therefore it might be especially sensitive to new physics. Measurements of various production and decay quantities of the top quark could lead to discoveries of physics beyond the standard model. Several such measurements were p… more
