An Elementary Treatment of Gamma-Ray Heating and Gamma-Ray Dosage in Inhomogeneous Reactors

Description: An analysis is made of the heat produced by the absorption of gamma rays in a sample placed into a reactor. It is clearly shown that enormous local (space) variations in gamma flux exist in current reactors. An application to the Hanford reactors is treated in some detail. Preparation of Refractories from Uranium Dioxide for Melting Uranium

Description: Attention is now being drawn to the refractory properties of the pure dioxide of uranium, which make it suitable for special applications, such as the melting of pure uranium. Properties of uranium dioxide are described as they relate to fabrication. Forming of UO{sub 2} refractories by pressing and slip casting is discussed, as well as the firing of urania refractories and the properties of fired ware. Health hazards pertaining to UO{sub 2} are briefly described.

ADVANCED DESIGNS OF MAGNETIC JACK-TYPE CONTROL ROD DRIVE

Description: The magnetic jack is a device for positioning the control rods In a nuclear reactor, especially in a reactor containing water under pressure. Magnetic actuation precludes the need for shaft seals and eliminates the problems associated with mechanisms operating in water. It consists of a pressure shell, four sets of external stationary magnet coils (hold, grip, lift, pull down), and one Internal moving part (ammature) that impants linear motion to a cluster of rods. ON THE THEORY OF THE POLARIZATION OF NUCLEONS BY DEUTERONS

Power Transfer Functions of the EBWR Obtained Using a Sinusoidal Reactivity Driving Function

Description: A series of reactor frequency response measurements, relating flux or power level to a reactivity input function, were made to evaluate reactor stability for different values of power parameters. These parameters included: power level, steam pressure, and control rod position. The results were extrapolated to predict EBWR stability at higher operating powers. Self-Diffusion in Gamma Uranium

Description: The self-diffusion coefficient or uranium was measured at four temperatures in the gamma phase. The data are fitted by an Arrhenius-tyoe equation D = 2.33 x well with previously reported results. The value of D/sub o/ is lower than that predicted by Zener's theory, and the activation energy is much less than the value expected from various empirical codelations. (auth)

Variable Metric Method for Minimization
