State-of-the-Art for Assessing Earthquake Hazards in the United States: Report 19, The Evidence for Reservoir-Induced Macroearthquakes

Description: Partial abstract: "The published evidence of reservoir-induced macroearthquakes is critically reviewed. The evidence is partitioned into three types: (a) evidence of a post-impoundment increase in seismicity, (b) correlation evidence that is composed of a plot of a reservoir variable and a seismicity variable and, in most cases, an auxiliary variable, time, and (c) evidence based on the slope of the magnitude-frequency relationship (b value evidence)."

Isabella Dam Spillway, Kern River, California: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Abstract: "Tests were conducted on a 1:50-scale model of Isabella Dam Spillway to determine the adequacy of proposed spillway, dam, and channel improvements. The model reproduced an area of the reservoir 800 ft wide by 1,100 ft long, the spillway, and the entire length of the exit channel. Unsatisfactory flow conditions were observed in the vicinity of the spillway crest due to approach conditions to the spillway. Large cross waves, present in the exit channel just downstream of the spillway, resulted in occasional overtopping of the right wall. A grouted rock dike that provided satisfactory flow conditions at the spillway and downstream throughout the exit channel was placed adjacent to the existing spillway approach wall."

Repair of Waterstop Failures: Case Histories

Description: This report discusses case studies of failures in waterstops that prevent water passage through the monolith joints of concrete dams and locks. "The primary objective of this study was to identify materials and techniques which have been used in repair of waterstop failures. Also, based on a review and evaluation of current practices, a secondary objective was to identify those areas where research is needed to supplement existing technology" (abstract).

Levee Underseepage Analysis for Special Foundation Conditions [Floppy Disk]

Description: Computer program developed to predict underseepage conditions for special cases of levee and foundation geometry. The differential equations for levee underseepage were derived and programmed in finite difference form for three special cases of boundary conditions. The developed programs allow analyses that are not restricted to the boundary conditions assumed in the conventional, closed form solution, i.e., two foundation layers of uniform thickness with horizontal boundaries.

Chemical and Biological Characterization of Black Rock Harbor Dredged Material

Description: "This is one in a series of scientific reports documenting the findings of studies conducted under the Interagency Field Verifications of Testing and Predictive Methodologies for Dredged Material Disposal Alternatives (referred to at the Field Verification Program or FVP). This program is a comprehensive evaluation of environmental effects of dredged material disposal under conditions of upland and aquatic disposal and wetland creation."

The Vaiont Slide: A Geotechnical Analysis Based on New Geologic Observations of the Failure Surface, Volume 1: Main Text

Description: First part of a final report describing "efforts to confirm the existence and nature of clay seams in the [Vaiont Slide] mass and to confirm the possible existence of an 'old' slide at the site. These efforts were made by (a) firsthand field observations of the geology, (b) an examination of preslide and postslide airphotographs, (c) laboratory testing of samples of failure plane materials, and (d) and examination and translation of geologic and other documents related to preslide and postslide conditions" (abstract, para. 2). The report also presents stability analyses of the Vaiont Slide.

Large-Scale Operations Management Test of Use of the White Amur for Control of Problem Aquatic Plants, Report 2: First Year Poststocking Results, Volume 2: The Fish, Mammals, and Waterfowl of Lake Conway, Florida

Description: Abstract: "Fish, waterfowl and wading birds, and aquatic mammal populations on Lake Conway were surveyed for 1 year after the introduction of the herbivorous fish, white amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Low water levels reduced littoral zone area, which lead to stunted panfish and poorer condition of largemouth bass. Vegetated samples supported more diverse fish populations than beach sites. White amur and migratory waterfowl consumed the same plant foods; continued reduction of submerged plants by white amur may adversely affect overwintering waterfowl populations. Aquatic mammals were influenced by removal of vegetation due to shoreline development."
