Nuclear Stewardship Research.

Description: This report covers the period from June 2005 through May 2006. During this, the third year of our program, our research has focused mainly on applying the surrogate reaction technique and our newly developed surrogate ratio method to deduce neutron induced fission cross sections on uranium nuclei. The year has been marked by continued scientific progress, by the arrival of new personnel, by a growth in the numbers of students working in the group and by a continuation of our experimental progra… more

New Accessory for Cleaning the Inside of the Machine Tool Cavity

Description: The best way to extend the life of a metalworking fluid (MWF) is to make sure the machine tool and MWF delivery system are properly cleaned at least once per year. The dilemma the MWF manager is faced with is: How does one clean the machine tool and the MWF system on a large machine tool with an enclosure in a timely manner without impacting production schedules? Remember the walls and roof of the machine enclosure are coated with a film of dried contaminated MWF that must also be removed. If n… more

Mechanical Devices Readiness FY04.0402.3

Description: This project funded production process and tooling improvements to meet and sustain rate production for the W76-1 mechanism assemblies. Techniques were developed to allow evaluation and disposition of sealed stronglinks that resulted in prevention of the scrapping of numerous stronglinks and firesets. Improved processes and tooling allowed D-Test rates to be reduced in favor of E-Test, thus saving millions of dollars over the life of the program. Future system mechanisms will likely be smaller … more

Simulations of Small-Pore Microchannel Plates for Fast Gated X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy of High-Energy Density Plasmas

Description: This poster describes work done at National Security Technologies, LLC (NSTec), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) over the past several years on the design and characterization of microchannel plate (MCP)-based fast-gated x-ray imagers for use on the SNL Z machine. These cameras use 10-micron-pore MCPs similar to the type used for spectroscopy and imaging applications at other facilities. To aid in the understanding of MCP behavior, we have developed a Monte Carlo simulation model for pred… more

Inversion of Gravity Data to Define the Pre-Cenozoic Surface and Regional Structures Possibly Influencing Groundwater Flow in the Rainier Mesa Region, Nye County, Nevada.

Description: A three-dimensional inversion of gravity data from the Rainier Mesa area and surrounding regions reveals a topographically complex pre-Cenozoic basement surface. This model of the depth to pre-Cenozoic basement rocks is intended for use in a 3D hydrogeologic model being constructed for the Rainier Mesa area. Prior to this study, our knowledge of the depth to pre-Cenozoic basement rocks was based on a regional model, applicable to general studies of the greater Nevada Test Site area but inapprop… more
