Finding the magnetic center of a quadrupole to high resolution: A draft proposal

Description: In a companion proposal it is proposed to align quadrupoles of a transport line to within transverse tolerances of 5 to 10 micrometers. Such a proposal is meaningful only if the effective magnetic center of such lenses can in fact be repeatably located with respect to some external mechanical tooling to comparable accuracy. Advanced Light Source Linac subharmonic buncher cavities

Description: The Linear Accelerator (Linac) in the Advanced Light Source (ALS) is designed to provide either single or multiple bunches of 50 MeV electrons for the booster synchrotron. Three bunchers are used in the Linac. The 3 GHz S band buncher has been described elsewhere. This report deals with the two lower subharmonic bunchers. Application of the SSCTRK numerical simulation program to the evaluation of the SSC magnet aperture

Description: The SSCTRK numerical simulation code has been used to estimate the benefit of increasing the SSC dipole aperture from 4 to 5 cm. The increase in maximum amplitude of stable betatron oscillations depends on the level to which systematic errors have been corrected. Two cases have been studied, a highly corrected ring and a ring with limited corrections. Advanced light source master oscillator

Description: The Master Oscillator of the Advanced Light Source operates at a frequency of 499.654 MHz which is the 328th harmonic of the storage ring. Vacuum system for the LBL Advanced Light Source (ALS)

Description: A 1.5 to 1.9 GeV synchrotron light source is being built at LBL. The vacuum system is designed to permit most synchrotron photons to escape the electron channel and be absorbed in an antechamber. Progress in the material development of LiCaAlF sub 6 :Cr sup 3+ laser crystals

Description: High Cr{sup 3+} doping levels, up to 8 mole percent, and low losses have been obtained with the tunable solid-state laser material LiCaAlF{sub 6}:Cr{sup 3+} (Cr:LiCAF). Magnetic field dependence of the specific heat of heavy-fermion YbCu sub 4. 5

Description: The specific heat of a polycrystalline sample of YbCu{sub 4.5} has been measured between 0.3 and 20K in magnetic fields to 7T. At zero field a minimum in C/T is observed near 11K. Below that temperature C/T increases and below 0.5K exhibits an upturn ascribed to a hyperfine contribution. The increase in C/T below 11K is reduced by a factor 1.5 for H = 7T, whereas the hyperfine term is enhanced due to the contribution of the {sup 63}Cu and {sup 65}Cu and nuclei. 5 refs., 3 figs.

Repetitive Stern-Gerlach Effect

Description: I show that two spin rotators 180{degree} apart may be desirable for the repetitive Stern-Gerlach effect. I also calculate the effect of depolarization resonance on the repetitive Stern-Gerlach effect. It is shown that to first order in resonance strength, we can avoid the imperfection resonance if the energy of the beam is at G{gamma} = n + 1/2. The time available for accumulating the Stern-Gerlach kick is then limited by the intrinsic resonance. 5 refs., 1 fig.

Study of hot carrier relaxation in quantum wells by subpicosecond Raman scattering

Description: Relaxation of hot carriers excited by subpicosecond laser pulses has been studied by Raman scattering in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells with well widths varying between 100 and 1000 {Angstrom}. The hot phonon population observed by Raman scattering is found to decrease with the well width despite the fact that the hot electron temperature remains constant. The results are explained in terms of confinement of both electrons and optical phonons in quantum wells.
