TFTR Experimental Data Analysis Collaboration. Annual Progress Report covering the period November 15, 1993 - November 14, 1994

Description: The research performed during the third year of this grant concentrated on a few key TFTR experimental data analysis issues: (1) characterization of MHD mode activity in TFTR; (2) comparison of low mode number MHD modes with neoclassical MHD theory; (3) further developments in local electron heat transient transport measurements; and (4) some other topics. Emphasis is placed on differences in these characteristics in DT and DD plasmas.

DONIO: Distributed Object Network I/O Library

Description: This report describes the use and implementation of DONIO (Distributed Object Network I/O), a library of routines that provide fast file I/O capabilities in the Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon distributed memory parallel environments. DONIO caches a copy of the file in memory distributed across all processors. Disk I/O routines (such as read, write, and lseek) are replaced by calls to DONIO routines, which translate these operations into message communication to update the cached data. Experiments o… more

Lifetime and Tail Simulations for Beam-Beam Effects in PEP-II B Factory

Description: A fast tracking technique for doing beam tail simulations has been applied to a study of beam-beam effects in the SLAC/LBL/LLNL PEP-II B Factory. In particular, the dependence of beam lifetime and particle density distribution due to vacuum pressure, damping times, machine nonlinearity and parasitic crossings has been analyzed. Effects of accidental orbit separation and dispersion function at the interaction point (IP) have also been considered.

Electromechanical properties of superconductors for DOE fusion applications

Description: The electrical performance of many superconducting materials is strongly dependent on mechanical load. This report presents electromechanical data on a broad range of high-magnetic-field superconductors. The conductors that were studied fall into three general categories: Candidate conductors, experimental conductors, and reference conductors. Research on candidate conductors for fusion applications provides screening data for superconductor selection as well as engineering data for magnet desi… more

Proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Targetry and Target Chemistry

Description: The goal of the International Workshop on Targetry and Target Chemistry series has always been to provide an open forum for discussion of medical radionuclide production, primarily with particle accelerators. The format is intended to encourage the participants to set the direction of the ensuing discussion, allowing the participants to focus on areas of greatest immediate interest. The preceding workshops have set this tone and this workshop was designed to continue in this spirit. The topics … more

A program in medium-energy nuclear physics. Progress report, January 1, 1992--March 31, 1995

Description: This renewal proposal requests continued funding for our program in experimental medium-energy nuclear physics. The focus of our program remains the understanding of the short-range part of the strong interaction in the nuclear medium. In the past three years we have focused our attention ever more sharply on experiments with real tagged photons at CEBAF. We are part of the Hall-B Collaboration at CEBAF. We are co-spokespersons on two approved CEBAF experiments, Photoreactions on {sup 3}He and … more

DOLIB: Distributed Object Library

Description: This report describes the use and implementation of DOLIB (Distributed Object Library), a library of routines that emulates global or virtual shared memory on Intel multiprocessor systems. Access to a distributed global array is through explicit calls to gather and scatter. Advantages of using DOLIB include: dynamic allocation and freeing of huge (gigabyte) distributed arrays, both C and FORTRAN callable interfaces, and the ability to mix shared-memory and message-passing programming models for… more

Crosshole geotomography in a partially depleted reservoir. Final report

Description: Specific project objectives are to: characterize downhole seismic sources; show the applicability of crosswell tomography as a tool for reservoir characterization in depleted reservoirs; use crosswell methodology to make attenuation estimates; use crosswell methods for lithology prediction and fluid detection; and combine crosswell methods with VSP and high-resolution 3-D surface seismic methods to characterize lithology. Major recent accomplishments include: production of a P-wave velocity tom… more

Using spin to probe hadronic structure

Description: The theoretical and experimental status of high energy spin phenomena is summarized, with emphasis on the spin properties of nucleons. It is stressed that crucial tests of the Standard Model can be made with polarization experiments. By performing the experiments discussed here, the authors will reveal important constituent and composite properties of protons and neutrons. The future prospects for planned polarization experiments are discussed.

Computational methods for improving the resolution of subsurface seismic images. Final report

Description: The original goal is to devise computational methods for improving the resolution of subsurface seismic images. Initially the research emphasis was primarily on developing methods for efficient ray- theoretic modeling of acoustic waves in triangulated representations of media and on efficient means of modeling waves that travel sub- horizontally in horizontally layered media. Subsequent directions included new efficient methods for imaging the Earth`s subsurface (specifically, 3-D migration via… more

Method for detecting and diagnosing disease caused by pathological protein aggregation

Description: A method is provided for detecting pathological macromolecules in a patient, comprising obtaining body fluid from the patient, pretreating the body fluid, subjecting the pretreated body fluid to size-exclusion chromatography to create an excluded fluid, and analyzing the excluded fluid to detect macromolecules having a predetermined molecular weight. The method also allows for comparing elution spectra with reference spectra of suspect pathologic proteins.

Progress in research April 1, 1993--March 31, 1994, Texas A and M University Cyclotron Institute

Description: The period 1 April 1993--31 March 1994 has seen a number of significant developments of the research program as will be noted by the large increase in individual projects reviewed in this annual report. Among the highlights of the K500 experimental program in Sections 1, 2, and 4 are the investigations of excitation energy deposition and of fission dynamics employing both GDR and particle emission probes, measurements of isospin equilibration, studies of (d, {sup 2}He) reactions with the proton… more

CARDS - comprehensive aerological reference data set. Station history, Version 2.1

Description: The possibility of anthropogenic climate change has reached the attention of Government officials and researchers. However, one cannot study climate change without climate data. The CARDS project will produce high-quality upper-air data for the research community and for policy-makers. The authors intend to produce a dataset which is: easy to use, as complete as possible, as free of random errors as possible. They will also attempt to identify biases and remove them whenever possible. In this r… more
