Resonant second harmonic generation in potassium vapor

Description: Picosecond pulses are used to study resonant second harmonic generation in potassium vapor. Although the process is both microscopically and macroscopically forbidden, it can readily be observed. The results can be quantitatively understood by a multiphoton-ionization-initiated, dc-field-induced, coherent transient model.

New vision on surface diffusion

Description: Although surface diffusion has been a subject of extensive studies, its understanding is still rudimentary. The authors have recently developed a novel technique utilizing optical diffraction from a laser-induced one-dimensional monolayer grating to probe chemical surface diffusion. Since the diffusion involved is one-dimension, it can be easily analyzed. By varying the grating period, the measurable diffusion coefficient can have a dynamic range of about 9 orders of magnitude, from 10{sup {min… more
