Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to John Grisby, Superintendent of Pilot Point ISD. Discussing the future relationship with Pilot Point. Having talked with Sylvia Russel, McCarter has come to an understanding that there are existing problems that threaten the continuation of Pilot Point as a consortium of NTIEVA, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. The rapid growth of the district has left little time for Russel to continue her duties within the institute. McCarter asks Grisby if there is any one else in the district who can take over to Russel and her active duties.

[Document from Bill McCarter to Beverly Fletcher, March 26, 1991]

Description: Photocopy of a document from Bill McCarter, Co-Director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Beverly Fletcher. The document is separated into two sections, the first section being about Dr. Jack Davis, Provost of UNT and a major figure in Art Education having won many awards for his service to the discipline of art education along with Dr. Bill McCarter, Regents Professor at UNT. Both Davis and McCarter are co-directors of NTIEVA, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, an institute funding by matching grants from the Getty Center, Amon Carter Foundation and others. The second part of the letter is about their program, DBAE, the approach to art education by involve art specialists and classroom teachers in expanding art to include not only art production but critical thinking, judgement and other formalities. The hand-written note at the bottom reads, "Bev. we need overhead projector - thanks."

In regards to a constructive meeting between Kevin Comerford and McCarter discussing mutual topics of interest for the museum and North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. Comerford agreed to consider a graduate student of UNT as an intern to work with him during the spring, to work specially with the computer and interactive technology in the context of art history. The conversation continued to collaborative effort for developing software based on study prints, and would like Gates's insight into the proposed project. [Letter from Bill McCarter to Carol Wyrick, July 15, 1996]

Description: Photocopies of evaluations and comments for the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution: An Introduction to Latino Art and Culture, dated June 26 - 28, 1996. The evaluations are rating the quality of the workshop by answering the questions of material, information, topics and other objectives that the exhibit provided. In a letter to Carol Wyrick, July 15, 1996, Bill McCarter apologies for withholding the evaluations but NTIEVA wanted to record the general comments made about the Institute. Some of the comments read as written, "I enjoyed the workshop and learned a lot." "Those of us who teach the younger students found the drawing studies to be of little relevance to the level of production appreciated [by] our students." Other comments continue with the enthusiasm of the quality of materials and the presentations, as well as offer suggestions or provide concerns about the related subject.

[Letter from Bill McCarter to Bill Cormack, Janice Wiggins and Chris Thomason, July 28, 1995]

Description: Photocopy of a summary letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Bill Cormack, Janice Wiggins and Chris Thomason. Regarding a meeting that fell on June 22, 1995, notably, the participation of Dallas ISD in future activities with the Institute. McCarter starts the letter with the proposal of a new time frame for the Institute activities, and mentions how the meeting brought up the ideas of having all-day Saturday sessions. However, McCarter expresses his concern that some teachers from the Dallas ISD might be unable to attend all-day Saturday sessions, and how important it is that they will attend all the meetings because of how complex the Institute is. Included in the letter is an observation from Chad Woolery, stating that due to budget and time that Dallas would be unable to continue participation with NTIEVA as a consortium member. McCarter addresses that they have had issues with Dallas since they began to participate.

In regards to the Latino Art and Culture exhibition being held at the Smithsonian Institution and how most of the teachers in the NTIEVA program are teaching at schools with a large percentage of Latino students. The teachers are having a problem finding quality materials associated with Latino artists and McCarter is interested in having the institute devote a portion of their time to the Latino Art and having Wyrick come to the Texas institute to introduce new instruction packages.

[Letter from Bill McCarter to Janice Wiggins, May 8, 1992]

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Janice Wiggins, Dallas ISD. McCarter mentions that Wiggins appears to have excessive demands by the district, and he would like to discuss options of relieving Wiggins of some of her responsibilities. McCarter asks Wiggins if she could give them any names of appropriate individuals who would help with some of the pressure. McCarter then mentions an agreement between Dr. Marvin Edwards and the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, stating that Edwards could provide six art teachers who will devote time towards the DBAE program, and ask Wiggins if Edwards or other officials could be reminded of the commitment and honor it. If the Institute is not able to document the in-kind contribution by the district, NTIEVA is in trouble with both the Getty and the Marcus Foundation. McCarter ends the letter saying he'll call in the next few days to discuss the best course of action. Copied on the letter is Jack Davis.

Description: Photocopy of a letter from Bill McCarter, co-director of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Bill Cormack, Superintendent of Dallas ISD. McCarter writes that from the point of view of NTIEVA, there has been new energy and focus from Woolery's good words from their panel, TASA/TASB. It gave NTIEVA them insight into the leadership Woolery is providing. McCarter also writes that they appreciate Dr. Skinner and Bill Cormack, who have proven themselves as able spokespersons for the distract during their recent meeting at the Dallas Museum between DMA Education Committee and members of the Board of the Marcus Foundation. McCarter ends the letter by stating that NTIEVA is in the early stages of planning for activities during the summer of 1995 and that the involvement of the Dallas teachers makes them look forward to another successful Institute. Copied on the letter are, Jack Davis, J. Skinner and Bill Cormack.

In regards of Dallas participation in the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. McCarter writes that after reviewing their budget they have found that they will be able to fund one team from DISD for the first year at the Institute. After that one year they are going to discuss the re-entry of Dallas into the five year plan after discussing with the Getty Center about more funding. McCarter hopes to meet up with Dunn to discuss finer details in an upcoming meeting.

Describing his recent trip to Canada, McCarter mentions that many presentations encountered the same problems in identifying common traits found in art. McCarter continues to say he does not see the dilemma in using the word aesthetic as it means various things to different people.

Description: Photocopy of a letter template from Bill McCarter to Advisory Committee Members, thanking for agreeing to serve on the committee for the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts. The Institute is excited to have E.A. Carmean, Director of the Ft. Worth Modern Art Museum, serve as chair of the committee. Their first scheduled meeting will be a luncheon on May 25, 1990 at the University Union. Included with the letter was a map of the University, showing their guests where they will be able to park the day of the meeting. The map is not present with the letter.
