Use of a small accelerator as a source of 14-MeV neutrons for shielding studies

Description: It is important in calculating complex shields such as those proposed for the fusion reactors to ascertain that the neutron cross-section data sets used in the calculations are as accurate as possible and that the calculational methods used to transport the neutrons are as reliable as practical. To assure that both these criteria are met, a project at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is being conducted in which a small accelerator is used to provide 14-MeV neutrons via the T(d,n)/sup 4/… more

Summary of the first neutron image data collected at the National Ignition Facility

Description: A summary of data and results from the first neutron images produced by the National Ignition Facility (NIF), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, CA, USA are presented. An overview of the neutron imaging technique is presented, as well as a synopsis of the data collected and measurements made to date. Data form directly driven, DT filled microballoons, as well as, indirectly driven, cryogenically layered ignition experiments are presented. The data presented show that the primary… more

Measurements of magnetic permeability and H{sub c} of magnet steels using digital techniques

Description: The magnet-to-magnet variations in the dipole field of superconducting accelerator magnets must fall within specified tolerances to avoid excessive beam losses during injection. At injection field levels ({approximately} 0.4 T for RHIC), the variations in the field attributable to the iron arise from variations in the chemical impurities, cold working and heat treatment. These structure-sensitive effects can be characterized by measuring the permeability and coercive force, H{sub c}, of iron sa… more

Failure of Stadard Optical Models to Reproduce Neutron Total Cross Section Difference in the W Isotopes

Description: Recently cross section differences among the isotopes{sup 182,184,186}W have been measured as part of a study of total cross sections in the 5-560 MeV energy range. These measurements show oscillations up to 150 mb between 5 and 100 MeV. Spherical and deformed phenomenological optical potentials with typical radial and isospin dependences show very small oscillations, in disagreement with the data. In a simple Ramsauer model, this discrepancy can be traced to a cancellation between radial and i… more

Measurement of Neutron Total Cross Sections in Support of the APT Program

Description: The authors have completed a new set of total cross section measurements of 37 samples spanning the periodic table. The authors employed the same technique as in a previous measurement, with refinements intended to allow measurements on separated isotopes, and with improved systematic error control. The goal of the new measurement was 1% statistical accuracy in 1% energy bins with systematic errors less than 1%. This was achieved for all but the smallest samples, for which the statistical accur… more
