Equations Representing Reactor System with Emphasis on KIB Digital Program

Description: "This report is written as a supplement to LAMS 2539. It is hoped that one will be able to read LAMS 2539, with emphasis on the fourth part (Memorandum N-4-79OU by 0. Farmer), with this memorandum to bridge the gaps and understand more about the model used and what the KIB Program can be used for. The system is defined by subsystems or subprograms: Thrust System, Heat Exchanger, Neutron Dynamics, Rod Actuator Dynamics, and Thermocouple Dynamics. The original Kiwi-B Flow System is included in th… more

Equilibria and Reaction Rates in the Disproportionation of Pu(IV)

Description: Abstract: "The equilibrium quotients and the specific rate constants for the disproportionation of Pu(IV) have been measured as a function of hydrogen and plutonium ion concentrations in perchloric acid solutions of unit ionic strength at 25.00 +/- 0.02. Instead of obtaining the plutonium ion concentrations spectrophotometrically as has been done by previous workers, measurements of the mean oxidation number of the solutions were combined with electromotive force measurements of the Pu(III)-Pu(… more

Soft Radiation From Pu²³⁹

Description: "The radiation from Pu²³⁹ have been studied in the region 5-25 keV. For this purpose, a proportional counter, filled with argon to a pressure of 53 cm Hg and with methane to a pressure of 6 cm Hg, was employed in combination with a single-channel pulse analyzer and associated amplifying and counting circuits."

The Determination of Indium in Indium Plutonium Solutions

Description: Abstract: "A gravimetric procedure is described for the analysis of indium-plutonium solutions. This procedure consists of a preliminary separation of the plutonium as the peroxide, followed by the quantitative precipitation of indium diethyl dithio carbamate from a slightly acid solution. The precipitate is dried at 105 C and weighed. Recoveries of 99.4 - 100.5% with an average precision of 2.3/100 were obtained on known Pu-In solutions containing 5 - 50 mg of indium per sample."

The Extraction of Uranium from Phosphate Solutions

Description: Abstract: "A process for the extraction and depoisoning of uranium in strong phosphoric acid solution with tributyl phostphate (TBP) is described. The formation of a complex between uranyl and phosphate ions necessities the use of a salting agent which is capable of destroying this complex and releasing the uranyl ion into an organic extractable species. Of various salting agents tried, ferric nitrate was the most successful. It not only provides nitrate ion for the formation of uranyl nitrate … more

Independent and Relative Yields of I¹³¹, I¹³², I¹³³, I¹³⁴, and I¹³⁵ Formed in Fission of U²³⁵ by 14-Mev and Thermal Neutrons

Description: Abstract: "The following results were derived from experiments in which iodine was quickly separated from irradiated uranium metal at a known time after irradiation. The fractional chain yields are based on the cumulative chain yields at iodine."

Neutron Distributions Measured with Beta Decays and Photographic Emulsions

Description: Abstract: "A method has been developed for observing the "fine structure" of neutron flux distribution. Difference in neutron flux in regions a half a millimeter apart have been measured. Examples in which this resolution has been useful are given. In the case of a polythene ball, three-fourths of an inch in diameter, in the center of the Little Eva reactor, the effective neutron flux varies 75% of the unperturbed value between two readings a tenth of an inch apart."

Velocities of Fragments from Fission of U²³³, U²³⁵ and Pu²³⁹

Description: The following report analyzes the velocity distribution of fragments from slow neutron induced fission that have been measured by a time-of-flight method. Data is compared with data from fission fragments stopped in ionization chambers filled with argon and carbon dioxide, and these velocity data indicate that the kinetic energies of the fragments exceed those reported by ionization chamber measurements.

Critical Strain Value for Alpha Recrystallized Rolled Uranium Sheet

Description: Abstract: "The percentage strain at which, or immediately higher than which, grain growth occurs on cold worked alpha recrystallize uranium sheet, appears to be at approximately 2-1/2 percent reduction in thickness. Grain growth from 20 microns to over 150 microns has been indicated for this region. This phenomena is especially noteworthy when deep drawn uranium shapes are to be reheated for a coining or restriking operation."

Neutrons from High Current Gaseous Discharges

Description: Abstract: "Experiments on the neutrons produced in a high-current pulse discharge in deuterium are described. With 15 kv applied to a straight discharge tube 30 cm in length neutrons are produced at ~1.4 [mu]sec after gas break-down in a pulse 0.1 [mu]sec in length. The yield, 10-7 - 10-8 neutrons per discharge, is quite sensitive to gas purity and discharge tube wall material. The axial asymmetry in neutron energy indicates that the neutrons were produced in reactions whose center of mass move… more

Critical Masses of Mildly Diluted U²³⁵ Systems Derived from Reactivity Contribution Data

Description: Abstract: "Radioactivity contribution data, obtained from U²³⁵ critical assemblies at Pajerito can be used to predict the effects of diluents on critical mass. The radioactivity contribution data versus radius for diluents in a given assembly may be expressed as a single functional relationship between integral absorption and transport cross sections of the diluents. Using this relation, there can be obtained a general expression for the dependence of critical mass upon volume fraction and the … more

Remote Control Equipment for Plutonium Metal Production

Description: Design and construction of remote control equipment for plutonium metal production are described. Criteria for the design of the equipment included the following: rubber gloves were to be completely eliminated; all mechanisms were to be built as integral units to facilitate replacement through use of the plastic- bag technique; no accessory equipment such as switches, valves, piping, or cylinders were to be inside the contaminated enclosure unless required to handle the plutonium; and all units… more

Radiologic Hazards Predicted for a Given Height Burst of an Atomic Bomb

Description: Abstract: An appraisal is made of the radiologic hazard created by a 1000-ft. high air burst of a nominal sized nuclear bomb. Three sets of graphs are included which show the relations between dose rate (milliroentgens per hour), time post-shot, and distance from Ground Zero for a soil having given constituents. Estimates are given for fall-out activity (gamma) for distances up to about 200 miles from Ground Zero immediately after fall-out. It is pointed out that the radiologic hazard due to… more
