Observation of Single Top Quark Production and Measurement of |Vtb| with CDF

Description: We report the observation of electroweak single top quark production in 3.2 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. Candidate events in the W+jets topology with a leptonically decaying W boson are classified as signal-like by four parallel analyses based on likelihood functions, matrix elements, neural networks, and boosted decision trees. These results are combined using a super discriminant analysis based on genetically evolved neural networks in order to improve the sensitivity. This combined result is further combined with that of a search for a single top quark signal in an orthogonal sample of events with missing transverse energy plus jets and no charged lepton. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction but inconsistent with the background-only model by 5.0 standard deviations, with a median expected sensitivity in excess of 5.9 standard deviations. We measure a production cross section of 2.3{sub -0.5}{sup +0.6}(stat + sys) pb, extract the CKM matrix element value |V{sub tb}| = 0.91{sub -0.11}{sup +0.11}(stat + sys) {+-} 0.07(theory), and set a lower limit |V{sub tb}| > 0.71 at the 95% confidence level, assuming m{sub t} = 175 GeV/c{sup 2}.

Observation of exclusive charmonium production and gamma gamma ---> mu+mu- in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: We have observed the reactions p + {bar p} {yields} p + X + {bar p}, with X being a centrally produced J/{psi}, {psi}(2S) or {chi}{sub c0}, and {gamma}{gamma} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two oppositely charged muons, each with pseudorapidity |{eta}| < 0.6, with M{sub {mu}{mu}} {element_of} [3.0; 4.0] GeV/c{sup 2} and either no other particles, or one additional photon, detected. The J/{psi} and the {psi}(2S) are prominent, on a continuum consistent with the QED process {gamma}{gamma} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}. Events with a J/{psi} and an associated photon candidate are consistent with exclusive {chi}{sub c0} production through double pomeron exchange. The exclusive vector meson production is as expected for elastic photoproduction, {gamma} + p {yields} J/{psi}({psi}(2S)) + p, which is observed here for the first time in hadron-hadron collisions. The cross sections d{sigma}/dy|y = 0 for p + {bar p} {yields} p + X + {bar p} with X = J/{psi},{psi}(2S) or {chi}{sub c0} are 3.92 {+-} 0.62 nb, 0.53 {+-} 0.14 nb, and 76 {+-} 14 nb respectively. The cross section for the continuum, with |{eta}({mu}{sup {+-}})| < 0.6, M{sub {mu}{mu}} {element_of} [3.0, 4.0] GeV/c{sup 2}, is {integral} d{sigma}/dM.d{eta}{sub 1}.d{eta}{sub 2} = 2.7 {+-} 0.5 pb, consistent with QED predictions. We put an upper limit on the cross section for odderon exchange in exclusive J/{psi} production: d{sigma}/dy|y = 0(J/{psi}{sub OIP}) < 2.3 nb at 95% C.L.

Observation of Exclusive Dijet Production at the Fermilab Tevatron p-pbar Collider

Description: The authors present the first observation and cross section measurement of exclusive dijet production in {bar p}p interactions, {bar p}p {yields} {bar p} + dijet + p. Using a data sample of 310 pb{sup -1} collected by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, exclusive cross sections for events with two jets of transverse energy E{sub T}{sup jet} {ge} 10 GeV have been measured as a function of minimum E{sub T}{sup jet}. The exclusive signal is extracted from fits to data distributions based on Monte Carlo simulations of expected dijet signal and background shapes. The simulated background distribution shapes are checked in a study of a largely independent data sample of 200 pb{sup -1} of b-tagged jet events, where exclusive dijet production is expected to be suppressed by the J{sub z} = 0 total angular momentum selection rule. Results obtained are compared with theoretical expectations, and implications for exclusive Higgs boson production at the pp Large Hadron Collider at {radical}s = 14 TeV are discussed.

First Flavor-Tagged Determination of Bounds on Mixing-Induced CP Violation in B0(s) ---> J/psi phi Decays

Description: This Letter describes the first determination of bounds on the CP-violation parameter 2{beta}{sub s} using B{sub s}{sup 0} decays in which the flavor of the bottom meson at production is identified. The result is based on approximately 2,000 B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}{phi} decays reconstructed in a 1.35 fb{sup -1} data sample collected with the CDFII detector using p{bar p} collisions produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of 2{beta}{sub s} and the decay-width difference {Delta}{Lambda}. Assuming the standard model predictions of 2{beta}{sub s} and {Delta}{Lambda}, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 15%, corresponding to 1.5 Gaussian standard deviations.

Evidence for a Mass Dependent Forward-Backward Asymmetry in Top Quark Pair Production

Description: We present a new measurement of the inclusive forward-backward t{bar t} production asymmetry and its rapidity and mass dependence. The measurements are performed with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, recorded with the CDF II Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Significant inclusive asymmetries are observed in both the laboratory frame and the t{bar t} rest frame, and in both cases are found to be consistent with CP conservation under interchange of t and {bar t}. In the t{bar t} rest frame, the asymmetry is observed to increase with the t{bar t} rapidity difference, {Delta}y, and with the invariant mass M{sub t{bar t}} of the t{bar t} system. Fully corrected parton-level asymmetries are derived in two regions of each variable, and the asymmetry is found to be most significant at large {Delta}y and M{sub t{bar t}}. For M{sub t{bar t}} {ge} 450 GeV/c{sup 2}, the parton-level asymmetry in the t{bar t} rest frame is A{sup t{bar t}} = 0.475 {+-} 0.114 compared to a next-to-leading order QCD prediction of 0.088 {+-} 0.013.

Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets topology at CDF II

Description: The authors present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the CDF experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. They analyze events from the single lepton plus jets final state (t{bar t} {yields} W{sup +}bW{sup -}{bar b} {yields} lvbq{bar q}{bar b}). The top quark mass is extracted using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event corresponds to the t{bar t} final state. The probability is a function of both the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets, which is constrained in situ by the hadronic W boson mass. Using 167 events observed in 955 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity, they achieve the single most precise measurement of the top quark mass, 170.8 {+-} 2.2(stat.) {+-} 1.4(syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}.

Measurement of d sigma/dy of Drell-Yan e+ e- pairs in the Z Mass Region from p anti-p Collisions at s88(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: We report on a CDF measurement of the total cross section and rapidity distribution, d{sigma}/dy, for q{bar q} {yields} {gamma}*/Z {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -} events in the Z boson mass region (66 < M{sub ee} < 116 GeV/c{sup 2}) produced in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV with 2.1 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. The measured cross section of 256 {+-} 16 pb and d{sigma}/dy distribution are compared with Next-to-Leading-Order and Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order QCD theory predictions with CTEQ and MRST parton distribution functions (PDFs). There is good agreement between data and theory except at large rapidity for which further tuning of PDF models may be needed.

Measurement of Cross Sections for b Jet Production in Events with a Z Boson in p-anti-p Collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: A measurement of the b jet production cross section is presented for events containing a Z boson produced in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb{sup -1} collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. Z bosons are selected in the electron and muon decay modes. Jets are considered with transverse energy E{sub T} > 20 GeV and pseudorapidity |{eta}| < 1.5 and are identified as b jets using a secondary vertex algorithm. The ratio of the integrated Z+b jet cross section to the inclusive Z production cross section is measured to be 3.32 {+-} 0.53(stat:) {+-} 0.42(syst:) x 10{sup -3}. This ratio is also measured differentially in jet E{sub T}, jet {eta}, Z-boson transverse momentum, number of jets, and number of b jets. The predictions from leading order Monte Carlo generators and next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are found to be consistent with the measurements within experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in Z/gamma*(---> e+ e-) + jets production in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/{gamma}* events, with Z/{gamma}* decaying into an electron-positron pair, are measured as a function of jet transverse momentum and jet multiplicity in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s - 1.96 TeV with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II, based on an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb{sup -1}. The measurements cover the rapidity region |y{sup jet}| < 2.1 and the transverse momentum range p{sub T}{sup jet} > 30 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are in good agreement with the measured cross sections.

Measurement of the Top Quark Mass and ppbar -> ttbar Cross Section in the All-Hadronic Mode with the CDFII Detector

Description: We present a measurement of the top quark mass and of the top-antitop pair production cross section using p{bar p} data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron Collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb{sup -1}. We select events with six or more jets satisfying a number of kinematical requirements imposed by means of a neural network algorithm. At least one of these jets must originate from a b quark, as identified by the reconstruction of a secondary vertex inside the jet. The mass measurement is based on a likelihood fit incorporating reconstructed mass distributions representative of signal and background, where the absolute jet energy scale (JES) is measured simultaneously with the top quark mass. The measurement yields a value of 174.8 {+-} 2.4(stat+JES){sub -1.0}{sup +1.2}(syst)GeV/c{sup 2}, where the uncertainty from the absolute jet energy scale is evaluated together with the statistical uncertainty. The procedure measures also the amount of signal from which we derive a cross section, {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 7.2 {+-} 0.5(stat) {+-} 1.0(syst) {+-} 0.4(lum) pb, for the measured values of top quark mass and JES.

Measurement of the top quark mass at CDF using the `neutrino phi weighting' template method on a lepton plus isolated track sample

Description: We present a measurement of the top quark mass with t{bar t} dilepton events produced in p{bar p} collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron ({radical}s = 1.96 TeV) and collected by the CDF II detector. A sample of 328 events with a charged electron or muon and an isolated track, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb{sup -1}, are selected as t{bar t} candidates. To account for the unconstrained event kinematics, we scan over the phase space of the azimuthal angles ({phi}{sub {nu}1}, {phi}{sub {nu}2}) of neutrinos and reconstruct the top quark mass for each {phi}{sub {nu}1}, {phi}{sub {nu}2} pair by minimizing a {chi}{sup 2} function in the t{bar t} dilepton hypothesis. We assign {chi}{sup 2}-dependent weights to the solutions in order to build a preferred mass for each event. Preferred mass distributions (templates) are built from simulated t{bar t} and background events, and parameterized in order to provide continuous probability density functions. A likelihood fit to the mass distribution in data as a weighted sum of signal and background probability density functions gives a top quark mass of 165.5{sub -3.3}{sup +3.4}(stat.){+-}3.1(syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}.

Measurement of the helicity fractions of W bosons from top quark decays using fully reconstructed t anti-t events with CDF II

Description: The authors present a measurement of the fractions F{sub 0} and F{sub +} of longitudinally polarized and right-handed W bosons in top quark decays using data collected with the CDF II detector. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 318 pb{sup -1}. They select t{bar t} candidate events with one lepton, at least four jets, and missing transverse energy. The helicity measurement uses the decay angle {theta}*, which is defined as the angle between the momentum of the charged lepton in the W boson rest frame and the W momentum in the top quark rest frame. The cos {theta}* distribution in the data is determined by full kinematic reconstruction of the t{bar t} candidates. They find F{sub 0} = 0.85{sub -0.22}{sup +0.15}(stat){+-}0.06(syst) and F{sub +} = 0.05{sub -0.05}{sup +0.11}(stat) {+-} 0.03(syst), which is consistent with the standard model prediction. They set an upper limit on the fraction of right-handed W bosons of F{sub +} < 0.26 at the 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the helicity of W bosons in top-quark decays

Description: We measure the branching fraction of the top quark to longitudinally and right-handed polarized W bosons, F{sub 0} and F{sub +}, using approximately 200 pb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions collected by the CDF II detector. We analyze two quantities sensitive to the W helicity: the invariant mass of the charged lepton and the bottom-quark jet in the decay t {yields} Wb {yields} {ell}{nu}b (where {ell} = e or {mu}), and the transverse momentum of the charged lepton. We find F{sub 0} = 0.74{sub -0.34}{sup +0.22}, and F{sub +} < 0.27 at the 95% confidence level. These measurements are in agreement with the standard model predictions.

Measurement of the Inclusive Isolated Prompt Photon Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the CDF Detector

Description: A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated photons by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity region |{eta}{sup {gamma}}| < 1.0 and the transverse energy range E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} > 30 GeV and is based on 2.5 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. The sample is almost a factor of seven larger than those used for recent published results and extends the E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} coverage by 100 GeV. The result agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations within uncertainties over the range 50 < E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} < 400 GeV, though the energy spectrum in the data shows a steeper slope at lower E{sub T}{sup {gamma}}.

Measurement of the t anti-t Production Cross Section in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Jet Probability b-tagging

Description: The authors present a measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. A b-tagging algorithm based on the probability of displaced tracks coming from the event interaction vertex is applied to identify b quarks from top decay. Using 318 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the CDF II detector, they measure the t{bar t} production cross section in events with at least one restrictive (tight) b-tagged jet and obtain 8.9{sub -1.0}{sup +1.0}(stat.){sub -1.0}{sup +1.1}(syst.) pb. The cross section value assumes a top quark mass of m{sub t} is presented in the paper. This result is consistent with other CDF measurements of the t{bar t} cross section using different samples and analysis techniques, and has similar systematic uncertainties. They have also performed consistency checks by using the b-tagging probability function to vary the signal to background ratio and also using events that have at least two b-tagged jets.

Measurement of the t anti-t production cross section in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV using missing E(T) + jets events with secondary vertex b-tagging

Description: The authors present a measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV which uses events with an inclusive signature of significant missing transverse energy and jets. This is the first measurement which makes no explicit lepton identification requirements, so that sensitivity to W {yields} {tau}{nu} decays is maintained. Heavy flavor jets from top quark decay are identified with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. From 311 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab they measure a production cross section of 5.8 {+-} 1.2(stat.){sub -0.7}{sup +0.9}(syst.) pb for a top quark mass of 178 GeV/c{sup 2}, in agreement with previous determinations and standard model predictions.

Measurement of the tanti-t Production Cross Section in p anti-ptnipbar Collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: The authors present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using 318 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. They select t{bar t} decays into the final states e{nu} + jets and {mu}{nu} + jets, in which at least one b quark from the t-quark decays is identified using a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. Assuming a top quark mass of 178 GeV/c{sup 2}, they measure a cross section of 8.7 {+-} 0.9(stat.){sub -0.9}{sup +1.1}(syst.) pb. They also report the first observation of t{bar t} with significance greater than 5{sigma} in the subsample in which both b quarks are identified, corresponding to a cross section of 10.1{sub -1.4}{sup +1.6}(stat.){sub -1.3}{sup +2.0}(syst.) pb.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in all-hadronic decays in p anti-p collisions at CDF II

Description: We present a measurement of the top-quark mass, M{sub tpo}, in the all-hadronic decay channel t{bar t} {yields} W{sup +}bW{sup -}{bar b} {yields} q{sub 1}{bar q}{sub 2}bq{sub 3}{bar q}{sub 4}{bar b}. The analysis is performed using 310 pb{sup -1} of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV p{bar p} collisions collected with the CDF II detector using a multi-jet trigger. The mass measurement is based on an event-by-event likelihood which depends on both the sample purity and the value of the top-quark mass, using 90 possible jet-to-parton assignments in the six-jet final state. The joint likelihood of 290 selected events yields a value of M{sub top} = 177.1 {+-} 4.9(stat.) {+-} 4.7(syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}.

Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in p anti-p Collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV using the Decay Length Technique

Description: We report the first measurement of the top quark mass using the decay length technique in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This technique uses the measured flight distance of the b hadron to infer the mass of the top quark in lepton plus jets events with missing transverse energy. It relies solely on tracking and avoids the jet energy scale uncertainty that is common to all other methods used so far. We apply our novel method to a 695 pb{sup -1} data sample recorded by the CDF II detector at Fermilab and extract a measurement of m{sub t} = 180.7{sub -13.4}{sup +15.5}(stat.) {+-} 8.6 (syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}. While the uncertainty of this result is larger than that of other measurements, the dominant uncertainties in the decay length technique are uncorrelated with those in other methods. This result can help reduce the overall uncertainty when combined with other existing measurements of the top quark mass.

Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the $B \to K^{(*)} \mu^+ \mu^-$ Decay and First Observation of the $B^0_s \to \phi \mu^+ \mu^-$ Decay

Description: We reconstruct the rare decays B{sup +} {yields} K{sup +} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, B{sup 0} {yields} K*(892){sup 0} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}, and B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {phi}(1020){mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} in a data sample corresponding to 4.4 fb{sup -1} collected in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Using 120 {+-} 16 B{sup +} {yields} K{sup +} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and 101 {+-} 12 B{sup 0} {yields} K*{sup 0} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decays we report the branching ratios. In addition, we report the measurement of the differential branching ratio and the muon forward-backward asymmetry in the B{sup +} and B{sup 0} decay modes, and the K*{sup 0} longitudinal polarization in the B{sup 0} decay mode with respect to the squared dimuon mass. These are consistent with the theoretical prediction from the standard model, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {phi}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decay and measure its branching ratio {Beta}(B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {phi}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}) = [1.44 {+-} 0.33 {+-} 0.46] x 10{sup -6} using 27 {+-} 6 signal events. This is currently the most rare B{sub s}{sup 0} decay observed.

Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Soft Electron b-Tagging

Description: We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to 1.7 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We reconstruct t{bar t} events in the lepton+jets channel, consisting of e{nu}+jets and {mu}{nu}+jets final states. The dominant background is the production of W bosons in association with multiple jets. To suppress this background, we identify electrons from the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavor jets ('soft electron tags'). From a sample of 2196 candidate events, we obtain 120 tagged events with a background expectation of 51 {+-} 3 events, corresponding to a cross section of {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 7.8 {+-} 2.4 (stat) {+-} 1.6 (syst) {+-} 0.5 (lumi) pb. We assume a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c{sup 2}. This is the first measurement of the t{bar t} cross section with soft electron tags in Run II of the Tevatron.

Measurement of the inclusive jet cross section using the k(T) algorithm in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: The authors report on a measurement of the inclusive jet production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using data collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in Run II (CDF II) corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 385 pb{sup -1}. Jets are reconstructed using the k{sub T} algorithm. The measurement is carried out for jets with rapidity 0.1 < |y{sup jet}| < 0.7 and transverse momentum in the range 54 < p{sub T}{sup jet} < 700 GeV/c. The measured cross section is in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions after the necessary non-perturbative parton-to-hadron corrections are included.
