Direct electron pair production in. pi. /sup -/p interactions at 16 GeV/c and a model for direct lepton and photon production at low P/sub T/

Description: The production of prompt electron-positron pairs in 16 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/p collisions has been measured using the LASS spectrometer at SLAC. An excess of events is observed above the estimated contributions of direct and Dalitz decay of known resonances in the kinematic range defined by 0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.45, 0 less than or equal to P/sub T/ less than or equal to 0.8 GeV/c and 0.2 less than or equal to M(e/sup +/e/sup -/) less than or equal to 0.7 GeV/c/sup 2/. The excess signal decreases slowly with increasing M, but exhibits very steep x and P/sub T//sup 2/ dependence. The contribution of this signal to the e/sup +/e/sup -//..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..gamma../..pi.. ratios is discussed. Detailed comparisons are made between e/sup +/e/sup -/ distributions and the corresponding low mass ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ distributions, and a simple production mechanism is proposed which describes the 16 GeV/c data well. The implications for direct photon production are presented, and it is shown that the model provides simultaneously a good description of the experimental data on the (e/..pi..) and (..mu../..pi..) ratios for p/sub T/ < 1 GeV/c.

Design of an electron beam spectral modification system

Description: We report the design of a spectral modification system (SMS) for use with the proposed NEAL linac-pulse stretcher ring, cw electron beam facility. The SMS allows tailoring of the energy distribution of electrons in beams produced by a pulsed linac operating in the transient beam loading (TBL) regime. Modification of the energy distribution of electrons injected into the pulse strecher ring will increase the duty factor of current extracted from the ring and improve the efficiency of the extraction process. Physically, the SMS consists of an anisochronous, achromatic magnetic lattice followed by a pair of traveling-wave accelerating sections. For beams in the energy range of 500 MeV to 4 GeV, TBL ripple on the energy envelope of microsecond long beam spills is expected to be reduced from 1% peak-peak to less than 0.01% while the desired width of the energy profile due to the phase extent of the microbunches in the beam spill is preserved.

Exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics

Description: Large momentum transfer exclusive processes and the short distance structure of hadronic wave functions can be systematically analyzed within the context of perturbative QCD. Predictions for meson form factors, two-photon processes ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. M anti M, hadronic decays of heavy quark systems, and a number of other related QCD phenomena are reviewed.

Crystal Ball evidence for new states

Description: Evidence for three new particles observed in the Crystal Ball detector is presented. The first particle, at 3592 MeV, is seen inclusively in ..gamma.. transitions from psi', and is thus a candidate for eta/sub c/'. The other two, at 1440 and 1640 MeV, are best seen in exclusive decays of psi involving a prompt ..gamma.., and are thus candidates for bound states of two gluons. Detailed reasons are presented to support the contention that these states are distinct from previously observed candidates such as E(1420). Alternative hypotheses are discussed.

Initial-state interactions, factorization, and the Drell-Yan process

Description: It is shown that initial state interactions violate the factorization conjecture for the Drell-Yan process order by order in perturbation theory. Also, the effects of elastic and inelastic initial state interactions on the observed cross sections are discussed.

Baryon production at PEP

Description: Measurements of inclusive ..lambda.. + anti ..lambda.. production for 1.0 less than or equal to p less than or equal to 10.0 GeV/c and p + anti p production for 0.4 less than or equal to p less than or equal to 2.0 GeV/c show significant baryon production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at E/sub cm/ = 29 GeV. ..lambda.. + anti ..lambda.. production represents 0.2 ..lambda..'s or anti ..lambda..'s per PEP event while the observed p + anti p production implies all baryon-antibaryon pair production is occurring at least as often as 0.6 per event, depending on the yet to be measured p + anti p production at high momentum. Comparisons are made with the first theoretical attempts to account for baryon production at these energies.

SLAC-Linac-Collider (SLC) Project

Description: The proposed SLAC Linear Collider Project (SLC) and its features are described in this paper. In times of ever increasing costs for energy the electron storage ring principle is about to reach its practical limit. A new class of colliding beam beam facilities, the Linear Colliders, are getting more and more attractive and affordable at very high center-of-mass energies. The SLC is designed to be a poineer of this new class of colliding beam facilities and at the same time will serve as a valuable tool to explore the high energy physics at the level of 100 GeV in the center-of-mass system.

Present SLAC accelerator computer control system features

Description: The current functional organization and state of software development of the computer control system of the Stanford Linear Accelerator is described. Included is a discussion of the distribution of functions throughout the system, the local controller features, and currently implemented features of the touch panel portion of the system. The functional use of our triplex of PDP11-34 computers sharing common memory is described. Also included is a description of the use of pseudopanel tables as data tables for closed loop control functions.

Stability of higher-order longitudinal modes in a bunched beam without mode coupling

Description: The theory of longitudinal instabilities of bunched beams was proposed by F. Sacherer. Starting from the Vlasov equation, he derived the integral equation for the perturbed distribution function. While the general method to solve the integral equation was given by Sacherer, a number of other papers discussing longitudinal bunched beam instability have also been published. Here we want to propose another formalism with which we can treat the integral equation without mode coupling for the case of a Gaussian bunch. We then generalize the formalism for the other bunch distributions, and derive a practical method to analyze the instability for the case of a parabolic bunch. While the solution of the Sacherer equation that we find is not new, we present another approach to solve it. Since the integral equation for the transverse instability is similar to that for the longitudinal instability, this formalism is also useful for the transverse case. 12 figs., 4 figs.

SLAC collider injector, RF-drive synchronization and trigger electronics, and 15-AMP thermionic-gun development

Description: The rf drive system for the Collider Injector Development (EL CID) including laser timing, subharmonic buncher drive and phasing, and accelerator rf drive is described. The rf synchronized master trigger generation scheme for the collider is outlined. Also, a 15 amp peak, 200 kV short pulse gun being developed at SLAC as a backup to the Sinclair laser gun is described.

Program BB for calculation of PEP corrector strengths for beam-bump excitation

Description: Excitation of a beam-bump (BB) can be effectively used for a number of goals. Since BB is sensitive only to perturbations of elements which are located inside it, errors and their consequencies spaced separately can be singled out and studied one by one. This technique in principle can be used to study the uniformity of the quadrupole distribution around the ring, the beam stays clear size of the machine at different locations, the polarity and probably even the strength of sextupole magnets, alignments of different monitors, etc. It can be used also to increase the beam cross section if that appears to be desirable. Design of PEP correctors does not allow to use them for excitation of a halfwave BB. The minimum number of correctors which can be used in this situation is three. The situation for horizontal plane is aggravated still more since most of horizontal correctors are hooked in pairs. The presence of sextupole magnets interlacing the correctors makes it necessary to use iterative procedure to find the corrector strengths for BB, since a perturbed orbit is influenced by a field of a sextupole magnet which in turn depends on the perturbed orbit value in the sextupole. Since the strength of sextupoles are rather small as the first guess of corrector strengths for iterative procedure can be taken the linear solution neglecting sextupoles. This paper describes the program BB itself, and some results of calculations with BB for PEP. 3 refs., 4 figs., 6 tabs.

Modes on a short SPEAR bunch as observed with a streak camera

Description: The longitudinal structure of electron bunches in the storage ring SPEAR on a single pass was studied with time resolution approx. 10 ps. The measuring instrument used is an image-converter streak camera, a specialized device heretofore used mostly by laser workers. Unexpectedly, under some conditions the charge in a single RF bucket breaks up into two short sub-bunches which seem to rotate about a common center in energy-phase space. No evidence is seen for other, higher-frequency structure on the bunches.

Prospects for very-high-gradient linac-colliders

Description: The energy realistically attainable by an electron-positron storage ring is limited by the RF voltage and power requirements imposed by synchrotron radiation to about 100 GeV. To reach energies of 300 x 300 GeV and higher in a colliding beam machine of reasonable dimensions, we must look to the linac-collider operating at an energy gradient on the order of 100 MV/m. Proper choice of an RF structure or such a collider can minimize the total RF power requirement and the effects of longitudinal and transverse single-bunch beam loading. For an operating frequency in the range 4 to 6 GHz, the total RF power requirement for a 300 x 300 GeV collider with a luminosity of 10/sup 32/ cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/ accelerating 10/sup 11/ particles per bunch is on the order of 50 MW. To drive this collider, RF power sources are needed having a peak output power in the range 1-2 GW. Possibilities for attaining these peak power levels by direct generation and by energy storage and fast switching are discussed.

Single bunch beam measurements for the proposed SLAC linear collider

Description: Single S-band bunches of approx. 10/sup 9/ electrons have been used to study the characteristics of the SLAC linac in anticipation of its operation as a linear collider. Emittance measurements have been made, the longitudinal charge distribution within single bunches has been determined and transverse emittance growth has been produced by deliberately missteering the beam. New equipment is being installed and checked out, and the sensitivity of new traveling-wave beam position monitors has been measured.

Non-linear optics for the final focus of the single-pass-collider

Description: The purpose of the final focus system (FFS) is to demagnify the beam envelope in the Collider arc lattice to a size suitable for beam collisions at the interaction region. The final spot size is determined by the beam emittance, the beta function ..beta..* at the IR, the momentum spread in the beam, and the quality of the FFS optics. In particular, if the focusing system is not chromatically corrected, the momentum dispersion in the beam can lead to a substantial degradation in the quality of the final focus. The objective is to design a FFS for 50 GeV/c within approx. 100 meters having an IR spot size sigma/sub xy/ of approximately 2 ..mu..m for a beam emittance of epsilon = 3 x 10/sup -10/ m-rad and a momentum spread of delta = +-0.5%. This requires a ..beta../sub x,y/ equal to or less than 1 cm. This report considers the problems encountered in the design of a final focus system that will reliably provide the desired beam size for collisions.

Pulse to pulse klystron diagnosis system

Description: This report describes a system used to study the behavior of SLAC high powered klystrons operating with a twice normal pulse width of 5 ..mu..s. At present, up to eight of the klystrons installed along the accelerator can be operated with long pulses and monitored by this system. The report will also discuss some of the recent findings and investigations.

Support and utilization of the LSI-11 processor family at SLAC

Description: Microcomputer systems based on the DEC LSI-11 processor family have been in use at SLAC for five years. They are used for a wide variety of applications. The support of these systems is divided into three general areas: engineering, maintenance, and software. Engineering specifies the system to match user requirements. SLAC has been able to design one general purpose system which can be tailored to fit many specific requirements. Maintenance provides system and component diagnostic services and repair. Software support includes software consulting services, assistance in systems design, and the development and support of special purpose operating systems and programs. These support functions are handled as subtasks by three teams in the SLAC Electronics Instrumentation Group. Each of these teams utilizes several LSI-11 systems in the performance of its primary tasks. They work closely together to jointly provide overall support for the larger SLAC community.

Beam parametr measurements for the SLAC linear collider

Description: A stable, closely-controlled, high-intensity, single-bunch beam will be required for the SLAC Linear Collider. The characteristics of short-pulse, low-intensity beams in the SLAC linac have been studied. A new, high-intensity thermionic gun, subharmonic buncher and S-band buncher/accelerator section were installed recently at SLAC. With these components, up to 10/sup 11/ electrons in a single S-band bunch are available for injection into the linac. the first 100-m accelerator sector has been modified to allow control of short-pulse beams by a model-driven computer program. Additional instrumentation, including a computerized energy analyzer and emittance monitor have been added at the end of the 100-m sector. The beam intensity, energy spectrum, emittance, charge distribution and the effect of wake fields in the first accelerator sector have been measured. The new source and beam control system are described and the most recent results of the beam parameter measurements are discussed.

Fundamental tests and measures of the structure of matter at short distances

Description: Recent progress in gauge field theories has led to a new perspective on the structure of matter and basic interactions at short distances. It is clear that at very high energies quantum electrodynamics, together with the weak and strong interactions, are part of a unified theory with new fundamental constants, new symmetries, and new conservation laws. A non-technical introduction to these topics is given, with emphasis on fundamental tests and measurements. 21 references.

Exclusive final states from photon-photon collisions at SPEAR

Description: Studies of exclusive final states produced by the two-photon process have been made at SPEAR by the Mark II and by the Crystal Ball Collaborations. Measurements of ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..pi../sup 0/..pi../sup 0/ production in the mass region 500 MeV/c/sup 2/ < m/sub ..pi pi../ < 2000 MeV/c/sup 2/ are presented. These data include strong signals from the well-known f(1270) meson. The A/sub 2/(1310) has been observed via its ..pi../sup 0/ eta decay mode and its partial width to ..gamma gamma.. has been determined. A measurement of the cross section for the reaction ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ is reported. This channel is found to be small just above the four pion threshold, but exhibits a large enhancement near the rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ threshold.
