3-D Seismic Experimentation and Advanced Processing/Inversion Development for Investigations of the Shallow Subsurface

Description: Gian Fradelizio, a Rice Ph.D. student has completed reprocessing the 3D seismic reflection data acquired at Hill AFB through post-stack depth migration for comparison to the traveltime and waveform tomography results. Zelt, Levander, Fradelizio, and 5 others spent a week at Hill AFB in September 2005, acquiring an elastic wave data set along 2 profiles. We used 60 3-component Galperin mounted 40 Hz geophones recorded by 3 GEOMETRICS Stratavision systems. The seismic source employed was a sledge… more

Aerial Gamma Ray and Magnetic Survey, Final Report. Volume 1: Rice Lake Quadrangle (Wisconsin), Iron Mountain Quadrangle (Wisconsin/Michigan), Eau Claire Quadrangle (Wisconsin/Minnesota), and Green Bay Quadrangle (Wisconsin)

Description: A high sensitivity airborne radiometric and magnetic survey of the Rice Like, Iron Mountain, Eau Claire and Green Bay 1:250,000 NMTS Quadrangles within the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. A total of 10,340 line miles of high sensitivity radiometric and magnetic data were collected within these quadrangles. Traverse lines were flown at a spacing of 3.125 miles in an east/west direction at a 18.375 miles seperation. All data were collected utilizing a fixed wing aircraft and over 3,… more

Agriculture and livelihood

Description: A discussion of agricultural practices amongst Lahu villagers. Some choose to plant their own small plots, but the elder encourages them to work together on larger plots. He reminds the villagers of an old saying that warns about rats and birds eating crops which aren't properly cultivated. They mention challenges like elephants trampling the crops, wild animals eating the crops, or the fields being burned by outsiders. They make plans to go hunting and scout different areas for planting in the… more

Alkali Deposits Found in Biomass Boilers: The Behavior of Inorganic Material in Biomass-Fired Power Boilers -- Field and Laboratory Experiences. Volume 2

Description: This report documents the major findings of the Alkali Deposits Investigation, a collaborative effort to understand the causes of unmanageable ash deposits in biomass-fired electric power boilers. Volume 1 of this report provide an overview of the project, with selected highlights. This volume provides more detail and discussion of the data and implications. This document includes six sections. The first, the introduction, provides the motivation, context, and focus for the investigation. The r… more

Alkali Deposits Found in Biomass Power Plants: A Preliminary Investigation of Their Extent and Nature. Volume 1

Description: Alkali in the ash of annual crop biomass fuels creates serious fouling and slagging in conventional boilers. Even with the use of sorbents and other additives, power plants can only fire limited amounts of these fuels in combination with wood. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), US Department of Energy, and the biomass power industry carried out eight full-scale firing tests and several laboratory experiments to study the nature and occurrence of deposits with the goal of increasin… more

Analysis of Japanese Exports and Imports of Rice

Description: This research shows that the Japanese rice policy has affected the volume of exported and imported rice; moreover, multilateral and bilateral agreements have also affected Japanese rice policy. Japan's institution of subsidies and trade barriers has made its rice products too expensive for foreign trade and its domestic consumers. Since the WTO agreement has forced Japan to open its market gradually over six years, Japan may be unable to compete internationally because of its limited land, high… more

(Atmospheric methane research program for a study in China)

Description: The most significant results of recent research are the findings (1) that methane emissions from rice paddies are strongly dependent on the soil temperature, and (2) that the fluxes of methane from the Chinese rice paddies are up to 10 times greater on average compared with fluxes from rice paddies in other parts of the world. In addition to the main findings there are a number of other significant results. These are: (1) the extension of a time series of concentrations of methane (and also of … more

Automated Eukaryotic Gene Structure Annotation Using EVidenceModeler and the Program to Assemble Spliced Alignments

Description: EVidenceModeler (EVM) is presented as an automated eukaryotic gene structure annotation tool that reports eukaryotic gene structures as a weighted consensus of all available evidence. EVM, when combined with the Program to Assemble Spliced Alignments (PASA), yields a comprehensive, configurable annotation system that predicts protein-coding genes and alternatively spliced isoforms. Our experiments on both rice and human genome sequences demonstrate that EVM produces automated gene structure ann… more
