A 12 GHZ 50 MW Klystron for Support of Accelerator Research

Description: A 12 GHz 50MW X-band klystron is under development at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Klystron Department. The klystron will be fabricated to support programs currently underway at three European Labs; CERN, PSI, and INFN Trieste. The choice of frequency selection was due to the CLIC RF frequency changing from 30 GHz to the European X-band frequency of 11.99 GHz in 2008. Since the Klystron Department currently builds 50MW klystrons at 11.424 GHz known collectively as the XL4 klystrons,… more

A 15-T Pulsed Solenoid for a High-Power Target Experiment

Description: The MERIT experiment, which ran at CERN in 2007, is a proof-of-principle test for a target system that converts a 4-MW proton beam into a high-intensity muon beam for either a neutrino factory complex or a muon collider. The target system is based on a free mercury jet that intercepts an intense proton beam inside a 15-T solenoidal magnetic field. Here, we describe the design and performance of the 15-T, liquid-nitrogen-precooled, copper solenoid magnet.

4th Generation ECR Ion Sources

Description: The concepts and technical challenges related to developing a 4th generation ECR ion source with an RF frequency greater than 40 GHz and magnetic confinement fields greater than twice Becr will be explored in this paper. Based on the semi-empirical frequency scaling of ECR plasma density with the square of operating frequency, there should be significant gains in performance over current 3rd generation ECR ion sources, which operate at RF frequencies between 20 and 30 GHz. While the 3rd generat… more

6D Ionization Cooling Channel with Resonant Dispersion Generation

Description: For muons with preferable for ionization cooling momentum <300MeV/c the longitudinal motion is naturally undamped. In order to provide the longitudinal damping a correlation between muon momentum and transverse position--described in terms of the dispersion function--should be introduced. In the present report we consider the possibility of dispersion generation in a periodic sequence of alternating solenoids (FOFO channel) by choosing the tune in the second passband (i.e. above half-integer… more

Accurate Measure by Weight of Liquids in Industry

Description: This research's focus was to build a prototype of a computerized liquid dispensing system. This liquid metering system is based on the concept of altering the representative volume to account for temperature changes in the liquid to be dispensed. This is actualized by using a measuring tank and a temperature compensating displacement plunger. By constantly monitoring the temperature of the liquid, the plunger can be used to increase or decrease the specified volume to more accurately dispense l… more

Alignment of the Fermilab D0 Detector

Description: The Fermilab D0 detector was used for the discovery of the top quark during Run I in 1996. It is currently being upgraded to exploit the physics potential to be presented by the Main Injector and the Tevatron Collider during Run II in the Fall of 2000. Some of the essential elements of this upgrade is the upgrade of the Solenoid Magnet, the Central Fiber Tracker, the Preshower Detectors, the Calorimeter System, and the Muon System. This paper discusses the survey and alignment of the these dete… more

Alternative connections for the large MFTF-B solenoids

Description: The MFTF-B central-cell solenoids are a set of twelve closely coupled, large superconducting magnets with similar but not exactly equal currents. Alternative methods of connecting them to their power supplies and dump resistors are investigated. The circuits are evaluated for operating conditions and fault conditions. The factors considered are the voltage to ground during a dump, short circuits, open circuits, quenches, and failure of the protection system to detect a quench. Of particular int… more

Aluminum Stabilized NbTi Conductor Test Coil Design, Fabrication, and Test Results

Description: A new generation of precision muon conversion experiments is planned at both Fermilab and KEK. These experiments will depend upon a complex set of solenoid magnets for the production, momentum selection and transport of a muon beam to a stopping target, and for tracking detector momentum analysis of candidate conversion electrons from the target. Baseline designs for the production and detector solenoids use NbTi cable that is heavily stabilized by an extruded high RRR aluminum jacket. A U.S.-J… more

Analysis and testing of the DIII-D ohmic heating coil lead repair clamp

Description: DIII-D has been operating for the last year with limited volt-second capabilities due to structural failure of a conductor lead to one of the ohmic heating (OH) solenoids. The conductor failure was due to poor epoxy impregnation of the overwrap of the lead pack, resulting in copper fatigue and a water leak. A number of structural analyses were performed to assist in determining the failure scenario and to evaluate various repair options. A fatigue stress analysis of the leads with a failed epox… more

Analysis of losses in ITER joints in varying parallel field

Description: One of the options for a design of a Central Solenoid in ITER and other tokamak machines is pancake would modules. In this configuration joints have to be placed in maximum magnetic field with high changing rate. In this condition joints should be designed to have at least the same or larger temperature margin as that for the conductor in the same field. It is argued that joints in parallel field can be designed to meet this requirement along with reasonably low DC resistance. Losses in paralle… more

Analysis of the Magnetic Field Measured by a Rotating Hall Probe in a Solenoid to Locate its Magnetic Axis

Description: We have analyzed the motion of a Hall probe, which is rotated about an axis that is arbitrarily displaced and oriented with respect to the magnetic axis of a solenoid. We outline how the magnetic field measured by the rotating Hall probe can be calculated. We show how to compare theoretical results with actual measurements, to determine the displacement and orientation of the axis of rotation of the probe from the magnetic axis. If the center of rotation of the probe is known by surveying, the … more

Analysis of the multiphase inductor-converter bridge

Description: Analytical derivations are presented for inductor-converter bridge (ICB) circuits in which energy is transferred from a storage inductor to a load inductor with solid state bridges. These derivations provide complete analytical circuit solution in contrast to previously available numerical (non-analytical) procedures. The analysis is based on two parallel methods: (1) Fourier expansion of the inverter waveforms; and (2) a novel method based on the inherent waveforms of the ICB, labeled square f… more

Analytical Study of Stress State in HTS Solenoids

Description: A main challenge for high field solenoids made of in High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) is the large stress developed in the conductor. This is especially constraining for BSCCO, a brittle and strain sensitive ceramic material. To find parametric correlations useful in magnet design, analytical models can be used. A simple model is herein proposed to obtain the radial, azimuthal and axial stresses in a solenoid as a function of size, i.e. self-field, and of the engineering current density fo… more

Angular distribution of laser ablation plasma

Description: An expansion of a laser induced plasma is fundamental and important phenomena in a laser ion source. To understand the expanding direction, an array of Langmuir probes were employed. The chosen ion for the experiment was Ag{sup 1+} which was created by a second harmonics of a Nd-YAG laser. The obtained angular distribution was about {+-}10 degree. This result also indicates a proper positioning of a solenoid magnet which enhances ion beam current.
