1/12-scale physical modeling experiments in support of tank 241-SY- 101 hydrogen mitigation

Description: Hanford tank 241-SY-101 is a 75-ft-dia double-shell tank that contains approximately 1.1 M gal of radioactive fuel reprocessing waste. Core samples have shown that the tank contents are separated into two main layers, a article laden supernatant liquid at the top of the tank and a more dense slurry on the bottom. 30-MJ superconducting magnetic energy storage for BPA transmission-line stabilizer

Description: The Bonneville Power Administration operates the transmission system that joins the Pacific Northwest and southern California. A 30 MJ (8.4 kWh) superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) unit with a 10 MW converter can provide system damping for low frequency oscillations. The unit is scheduled to operate in late 1982. 300-Element Silicon-Lithium Position-Sensitive Imaging Detector for Angiography

Description: Silicon lithium-drifted (Si(Li)) detectors 150 mm long, 10 mm wide and 5 mm thick with 300 individual elements have been fabricated as imaging detectors for noninvasive studies of human coronary arteries using 33 keV x-rays from a synchrotron radiation beamline. Description: The prediction of future CO/sub 2/ content in the atmosphere is not completely credible because the oceanographers and terrestrial ecologists do not agree on the global CO/sub 2/ balance. Description: This paper describes a 650 mm long liquid hydrogen targetr constructed for use in the high intensity electron beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The main design problem was to construct a target that would permit the heat deposited by the electron beam to be removed rapidly without boiling the hydrogen so as to maintain constant target density for optimum data taking. Ab initio effective core potentials including relativistic effects and their application to the electronic structure calculations of heavy atoms and molecules

Description: The effects of the 4f shell of electrons and the relativity of valence electrons are compared. The effect of 4f shell (lanthanide contraction) is estimated from the numerical Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations of pseudo-atoms corresponding to Hf, Re, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi without 4f electrons and with atomic numbers reduced by 14. Ab initio potential surface calculations for the H + H₂O and H + HF hydrogen atom exchange reactions

Description: The calculations reveal that the H + H/sub 2/O and H + HF exchange reactions are both characterized by a large energy barrier (on the order of 20 to 30 kcal/mole) and a transition state possessing significant Rydberg 3s character on the central atom. The presence of high energy barriers means that both exchange reactions will be extremely slow except at very high temperatures.

Absence of molecular deuterium dissociation during room-temperature permeation into polystyrene ICF target shells

Absorption experiments on electorn-beam pumped rare gases

Description: Absorption experiments have been performed on electron-beam pumped rare gases (argon and krypton) as a function of pump power using the frequency-doubled output of a tunable dye laser at 248.4 nm and 257.3 nm. Energy deposition into the gas was varied by attenuating the electron beam with one or two stainless steel screens and by filling the gas chamber with different rare gas densities. Absorption of ion Bernstein waves by impurity cyclotron harmonics

Description: This paper analyzes the damping of externally-launched ion Bernstein waves by absorption at the cyclotron harmonics of the impurity ions. The inclusion of the non-magnetic energy flux term reduces the damping rate by nearly two orders of magnitude from the previous calculation. Excessive impurity damping can be avoided by launching ion Bernstein waves at a frequency just below the second (or higher) cyclotron harmonic of hydrogen.

Absorption spectrophotometric characterization of Sm(II), Sm(III), and Sm(II/III) bromides and Sm(III) oxybromide in the solid state

Description: Absorption spectra obtained from SmBr/sub 3/, SmBr/sub 2/, and Sm0Br were used in identifying the samarium species in several mixed-valence Sm(II/III) compounds produced by H/sub 2/ reduction of SmBr/sub 3/. The nature of the absorption of Sm0Br made it possible to detect even traces of Sm0Br in the Sm bromides.

AC microcalorimetry of adsorbates on evaporated metal films: Orientational ordering of H₂ multilayers

Description: We have improved and extended a novel ac calorimetric technique for measuring the heat capacity of adsorbates on evaporated metal films. Accelerator-driven sub-critical target concept for transmutation of nuclear wastes
