About the Toroidal Magnetic Field of a Tokamak Burning Plasma Experiment with Superconducting Coils

Description: In tokamaks, the strong dependence on the toroidal magnetic field of both plasma pressure and energy confinement is what makes possible the construction of small and relatively inexpensive burning plasma experiments using high-field resistive coils. On the other hand, the toroidal magnetic field of tokamaks using superconducting coils is limited by the critical field of superconductivity. In this article, we examine the relative merit of raising the magnetic field of a tokamak plasma by increas… more

Accurate Calculation of Multispar Cantilever and Semicantilever Wings With Parallel Webs Under Direct and Indirect Loading

Description: In the present report the computation is actually carried through for the case of parallel spars of equal resistance in bending without direct loading, including plotting of the influence lines; for other cases the method of calculation is explained. The development of large size airplanes can be speeded up by accurate methods of calculation such as this.

Activation analysis of the compact ignition tokamak

Description: The US fusion program has completed the conceptual design of a compact tokamak device that achieves ignition. The high neutron wall loadings associated with this compact deuterium-tritium-burning device indicate that radiation-related issues may be significant considerations in the overall system design. Sufficient shielding will be requied for the radiation protection of both reactor components and occupational personnel. A close-in igloo shield has been designed around the periphery of the to… more

ADANS database specification

Description: The purpose of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) Deployment Analysis System (ADANS) Database Specification (DS) is to describe the database organization and storage allocation and to provide the detailed data model of the physical design and information necessary for the construction of the parts of the database (e.g., tables, indexes, rules, defaults). The DS includes entity relationship diagrams, table and field definitions, reports on other database objects, and a description of the ADANS data … more

Advanced performance fusion engineering device based on low safety factor and current drive (FED-A)

Description: The FED-A study aims to quantify the potential improvement in cost-effectiveness of the Fusion Engineering Device (FED) by assuming low safety factor q at the plasma edge and noninductive current drive. The FED-A performance objectives (ignition, neutron wall load, and power-reactor-like operation) are set to be equal to or better than those of the FED Baseline. The results show that assuming magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) q/sub psi/ (edge) to be 1.8 permits reduction in device size and plasma curre… more

Aerodynamic Loading Characteristics of a Wing-Fuselage Combination Having a Wing of 45 Degrees Sweepback Measured in the Langley 8-Foot Transonic Tunnel

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the aerodynamic loading characteristics of a wing-fuselage combination in the slotted test section of the transonic tunnel. The test was part of a systematic investigation of the effects of varying the amount of sweepback on wings in order to determine their suitability for transonic flight. Results regarding span load characteristics, normal-force characteristics, wing-tip angle of twist, spanwise distribution of section pitching-moment coefficient, pitchi… more

Aerodynamic Loads on an External Store Adjacent to a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing at Mach Numbers From 0.70 to 1.96, Including an Evaluation of Techniques Used

Description: "Aerodynamic forces and moments have been obtained in the Langley 9- by 12-inch blowdown tunnel on an external store and on a 45 degree swept-back wing-body combination measured separately at Mach numbers from 0.70 to 1.96. The wing was cantilevered and had an aspect ratio of 4.0; the store was independently sting-mounted and had a Douglas Aircraft Co. (DAC) store shape. The angle of attack range was from -3 degrees to 12 degrees and the Reynolds number (based on wing mean aerodynamic chord) va… more

Aerodynamic Loads on an External Store Adjacent to an Unswept Wing at Mach Numbers Between 0.75 and 1.96

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation in the blowdown tunnel of the pressure tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a sting-mounted Douglas Aircraft Company store in the presence of, but not attached to, an unswept semispan cantilevered wing of aspect ratio 4.0. The influence of the store on the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing was also obtained.

Aerodynamic problems in the design of efficient propellers

Description: From General Analysis: "The purpose of part I of this paper is to show how the loading that gives the minimum induced energy loss can be obtained from rather elementary considerations and to present design charts from which such a plan form can be quickly obtained for any set of design conditions."
