Automatic network analyzer procedures for 5045 klystron cavities

Description: This Note describes the results of using Automatic Network Analyzers in measuring SLAC 5045 klystron cavities. Two different analyzers were compared; the HP8753 and HP8510. Both analyzers have frequency synthesizer accuracy and stability to perform the measurement without the need for a frequency counter. The klystron has six cavities which can be put into three categories; input, gain and output. The input and output cavities require an external Q measurement (Qe) to determine coupling ({beta}… more

Bread: CDC 7600 program that processes Spent Fuel Test Climax data

Description: BREAD will process a family of files copied from a data tape made by Hewlett-Packard equipment employed for data acquisition on the Spent Fuel Test-Climax at NTS. Tapes are delivered to Livermore approximately monthly. The process at this stage consists of four steps: read the binary files and convert from H-P 16-bit words to CDC 7600 60-bit words; check identification and data ranges; write the data in 6-bit ASCII (BCD) format, one data point per line; then sort the file by identifier and time. more

Computer controlled data measurement and analysis system used for measuring switching parameters of semiconductors. [Employs HP 2114B minicomputer; reports contain all applicable coding in assembly language]

Description: A computer-controlled data acquisition system which was employed to measure the threshold switching parameters of amorphous semiconductors is described. This system is capable of measuring the delay time required for a sample to switch, the electrical energy put into a sample and the charge passing through it during the delay time, and its ambient temperature. With this equipment an experimenter is able to control the magnitude and maximum duration of the voltage applied to a sample, the time i… more

Computer workstation speeds

Description: This report compares the performance of several computers. Some of the machines are discontinued, and some are anticipated, but most are currently installed at Sandia Laboratories. All the computers are personal workstations or departmental servers, except for comparison, one is a Cray C90 mainframe supercomputer (not owned by the Laboratories). A few of the computers have multiple processors, but parallelism is not tested. The time to run three programs is reported for every computer. Unlike m… more

Engine data measurement system. [Pouliot variable displacement engine]

Description: The data measurement and reduction system for the Pouliot variable displacement engine uses a Hewlett Packard 2114A minicomputer. The raw data are processed to compute the horsepower, air-fuel ratio, equivalence ratio, brake specific fuel consumption, and brake specific emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. Emissions are checked for consistency by applying the chemical equilibrium theory of Spindt.

A fast optics and orbit correction program

Description: CEBAF is a large recirculating linear accelerator with approximately 1600 magnet power supplies in the beam transport system. The average beam power can be as great as 800 kW, concentrated into a spot of area less than 0.01 mm{sup 2}. Control of the transport is therefore quite critical, to avoid missteering the beam. To prevent dangerous beam losses and to prepare optics changes, the control programs must read the magnet power supplies and calculate the optics in a virtually real-time manner. … more

HP-67 calculator programs for thermodynamic data and phase diagram calculations

Description: This report is a supplement to a tabulation of the thermodynamic and phase data for the 100 binary systems of Mo with the elements from H to Lr. The calculations of thermodynamic data and phase equilibria were carried out from 5000/sup 0/K to low temperatures. This report presents the methods of calculation used. The thermodynamics involved is rather straightforward and the reader is referred to any advanced thermodynamic text. The calculations were largely carried out using an HP-65 programmab… more

The integrated workstation, a realtime data acquisition, analysis and display system

Description: The Integrated Workstation was developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to consolidate the data from many widely dispersed systems in order to provide an overall indication of the enrichment performance of the Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Separation experiments. In order to accomplish this task a Hewlett Packard 9000/835 turboSRX was employed to acquire over 150 analog input signals. Following the data acquisition, a spreadsheet-type analysis package and interpreter was used to derive … more

LSQFT: a nonlinear least squares data fitting subroutine suitable for minicomputers. [In FORTRAN for Hewlett Packard 1000]

Description: The FORTRAN subroutine LSQFT is described which uses the Gauss method to fit nonlinear functions to data. This particular program is suitable for use on a minicomputer that is utilized for real-time data acquisition and analysis. A sample problem is described that requires a nine-parameter nonlinear fit to 200 data points. This problem serves both to illustrate the use of LSQFT and to compare its results with TJMAR1, a nonlinear parameter estimation program available in the Sandia MATHLIB, for … more

Moving head disc operating system on an 854A automatic network analyzer

Description: The increased work load on the 8542A Automatic Network Analyzer revealed a need for a more efficient and flexible system to support measurement as well as software development projects. A search for such a system resulted in the choice of the moving head disc operating system (DOS-M). The conversion of the ANA operating system to DOS-M enhanced the operation and efficiency of the 8542A ANA. 5 figures.

Multi-user data acquisition environment

Description: The typical data acquisition environment involves data collection and monitoring by a single user. However, in order to support experiments on the Mars facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we have had to create a multi-user data acquisition environment where any user can control the data acquisition and several users can monitor and analyze data being collected in real time. This paper describes how we accomplished this on an HP A600 computer. It focuses on the overall system des… more

Plutonium Flowsheet Development in Miniature Mixer-Settlers

Description: Initial runs were completed in a new solvent extraction facility that has been built for testing coprocessing flowsheets with simulated LWR and FBR fuel solutions. The equipment, which is assembled in glove boxes, includes three 16-stage miniature mixer-settler banks with associated in-line monitors, pumping equipment, and sampling apparatus. Following shakedown runs with solutions containing uranium only, two flowsheet test runs were made with a simulated LWR fuel solution (U/Pu = 100). The so… more

TMX-U computer system in evolution

Description: Over the past three years, the total TMX-U diagnsotic data base has grown to exceed 10 megabytes from over 1300 channels; roughly triple the originally designed size. This acquisition and processing load has resulted in an experiment repetition rate exceeding 10 minutes per shot using the five original Hewlett-Packard HP-1000 computers with their shared disks. Our new diagnostics tend to be multichannel instruments, which, in our environment, can be more easily managed using local computers. Fo… more
