14 MeV neutron work at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Description: The 14 MeV neutron work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) covers two main areas of interest to this Symposium: (1) measurements and calculations of differential cross sections; and (2) integral measurements of the neutron and gamma emission spectra. In both areas a large number of materials have been studied, spanning a wide mass range (6 < A < 239), of interest to fusion and hybrid reactors. In this presentation a brief description of the experimental techniques and calculationa… more

100 Area Hanford soil washing treatability tests

Description: Soil washing laboratory tests performed at Hanford in support of 100 Area Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) feasibility studies included characterization of soils, physical separation, chemical extraction, and water treatment. Results to date show that < 20 % of the soil is finer than 0.25 mm ({minus}40 mesh). The highest concentration of {sup 60}Co, {sup 152}Eu, and {sup 137}Cs contaminants is generally associated with fine soil particles. However, … more

A 1000 HOUR TEST OF A CORROSION PRODUCT SEPARATOR UNIT IN A HAYNES ALLOY NO. 25 LOOP CONTAINING MERCURY--TEST G-16

Description: One of the major unsolved problems affecting the life of the SNAP II Power Conversion System is the mass transfer of corrosion products by mercury and subsequent deposition. It is feared that the corrosion products might tend to accumulate in critical areas such as orifices, bearings and so forth. Therefore, this test was conducted to evaluate a corrosion product separator and to determine the influence of corrosion product removal on corrosion rate. The corrosion product separator was successf… more

Absolute measurement of the critical scattering cross section in cobalt

Description: Small-angle neutron scattering techniques have been used to study the angular distribution of the critical scattering from cobalt above T/sub c/. These measurements have been put on an absolute scale by calibrating the critical scattering directly against the nuclear incoherent scattering from cobalt. In this way the interaction range r$sub 1$, which appears in the classical and modified Ornstein--Zernike expressions for the asymptotic form of the spin pair correlation function and is related t… more

Activated Corrosion Product Radiation Levels Near FFTF Reactor and Closed Loop Primary System Components

Description: This report contains estimates of the radiation levels in an FFTF reactor Heat Transport Systems (HTS) cell and near a Closed Loop System (CLS) module due to activated stainless steel corrosion product deposits in primary system piping and components.

Activation and Afterheat in a Fusion Power Reactor

Description: A series of calculations was performed to analyze the activation of the structure of the Princeton Reference Design D- T Fusion Power Reactor. The relevant isotope transmutation chains were solved numerically for 30 years' operation (3/4 load factor) at 5310 MW(t). Decay heat and activity curves versus time after shutdown were obtained for the reference stainless steel structure and for a vanadium alloy as an alternate. Afterheat appears not to pose a safety hazard because of the large blanket … more

Activation of cobalt by neutrons from the Hiroshima bomb

Description: A study has been completed of cobalt activation in samples from two new locations in Hiroshima. The samples consisted of a piece of steel from a bridge located at a distance of about 1300 m from the hypocenter and pieces of both steel and concrete from a building located at approximately 700 m. The concrete was analyzed to obtain information needed to calculate the cobalt activation in the two steel samples. Close agreement was found between calculated and measured values for cobalt activation … more

Activation of electrical machinery. Supplement 1. [Preliminary evaluation; not applicable to ground tests]

Description: The following analysis of the induced radioactivity in SNAP-50/SPUR electrical machinery having a high cobalt content is submitted. Induced radioactivity in the flight vehicle will contribute negligibly to allowable radiation levels. This is especially so due to the low neutron to gamma ratio of assumed radiation damage tolerances to semiconductors. A calculation to estimate the order of magnitude of induced radioactivity in cobalt is attached. The calculation is based on a best guess of the ne… more

Activation of methane by transition metal-substituted aluminophosphate molecular sieves

Description: Recent experiments in our laboratory have demonstrated that aluminophosphate molecular sieves substituted with cobalt and cobalt/silicon combinations and having the AlPO{sub 4}-34 or AlPO{sub 4}-5 structure activate methane starting at {approximately}350{degree}C. Between 400 and 500{degree}C the rate of methane conversion increases steadily with typical conversion efficiencies at 500{degree}C ranging from 15 to 60%. The cobalt and silicon substituted AlPO{sub 4}-34 structure (CoAPSO-34) produc… more

The activity of cobalt and silicon in the Co - Si system with special focus on the {alpha} - Co solid solution

Description: The activities of cobalt and silicon at 1463 K have been determined across the whole composition range in the Co - Si system, including the {alpha} - Co solid solution, for which no activity data were previously available. Simple and reactive Knudsen effusion mass spectroscopy employed in this work were shown to successfully overcome problems normally encountered in studying high-temperature solid binary systems, such as slow equilibration and low partial pressures of the components. The compos… more

Activity report: A report of research activity in fiscal years 1986 and 1987

Description: This report summarizes the last elements of work conducted in this program prior to its termination at the end of FY 87. The work was primarily an analysis of a fuel cell electrocatalyst using electron microscopy. The catalyst was a three component system containing Pt-Co-Ni (3:2:2 atomic ratios) dispersed on an amorphous carbon support in unknown phases, supplied to us by Giner Inc. (designated as their sample no. G82-5-19). The preparation of this catalyst is proprietary, (patent pending). Ou… more

Acute Gamma Irradiation of Quercus Seed--Its Effect on Germination and Seedling Growth

Description: Dormant seed of Quercus alba and Quercus rubra were irradiated with gamma rays from Co/sup 60/ to determine the efiect on cytological and morphological expression in the resulting seedlings. Investigations included varying moisture content and physiological state of the seed prior to treatment, and preliminary evaluation of induced mutation. The following observations were made. The lethal radiation exposure was the same for both species although there were differences in germination within the… more

Adherence of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ to CoCrAl coatings. [1000-1200/sup 0/C]

Description: Adhesion between surface scale and protective coating is an essential requirement of a material possessing good overall oxidation resistance. Poor adhesion can lead to exfoliation of the oxide in response to thermal cycling, or mechanically applied stresses, resulting in enhanced oxidation rates. Marked improvements in scale/substrate adhesion can be obtained via the formation of protrusions of oxide growing into the substrate. These act to key the protective scale to the surface and are more e… more

Adjustable rare earth quadrupole drift tube magnets

Description: A prototype permanent-magnet drift tube quadrupole with adjustable field strength has been constructed and tested. The magnet uses iron pole pieces to provide the required field shape along with rare earth permanent-magnet material (samarium cobalt) to energize the magnet. A unique feature of the configuration is the adjustability of the field, accomplished by rotating the outer rings consisting of permanent magnets and iron. In contrast with a previous prototype magnet, this new design uses ba… more
