Acceleration of a Plasma by Time-Varying Magnetic Fields

Description: Abstract: An application of the magnetic mirror principle to the acceleration of a plasma is described. It is shown that an axially symmetric magnetic field which increases with time but decreases with distance along the axis can impart a net translational energy to a plasma. This effect on a plasma is contrasted with that arising from an impressed electric field, which is not effective in producing acceleration.

Air Sample Activity vs Flow Rate

Description: A bibliography on the subject of air sample activity vs flow rate has been prepared. The findings in two documents reviewed have been applied directly to this problem. It is concluded that air sample activity is not dependent on flow rate when sampling particles whose average diameter in 0.06 micron or greater.

Airborne Reconnaissance in Southwestern Arkansas

Description: Introduction: Reconnaissance for uranium in central and southwestern Arkansas was carried out as a joint project of the U.S. Atomic energy Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey during March and May 1954. The project was planned as an investigation of several areas of known abnormal radioactivity, and as a search for others, by airborne and ground radiometric reconnaissance.

Altitude-chamber investigation of J73-GE-1A turbojet engine component performance

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the altitude performance characteristics of a J73-GE-1A turbojet engine conducted in an altitude chamber. The engine had a ten-percent oversize turbine-nozzle are compared with the production J73 engine. Results regarding radial pressure and temperature profiles, compressor performance, combustor performance, turbine performance, and tail-pipe-diffuser and exhaust-nozzle performance.

An Analytical Estimation of the Effect of Transpiration Cooling on the Heat-Transfer and Skin-Friction Characteristics of a Compressible, Turbulent Boundary Layer

Description: "An analysis based on mixing-length theory is presented which indicates that surface blowing associated with transpiration cooling systems produce large reductions in both the heat-transfer and skin-friction coefficients for a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. The numerical results are restricted to the case of air blowing into air. The effects of blowing are indicated to be similar for high-speed, compressible flow to those for low-speed, incompressible flow" (p. 1).

Anodic Etching Procedure for Uranium: Useful Lifetime of Baths Without Regeneration

Description: The useful lifetimes of the phosphoric-hydrochloric anodic etching solution and the nitric acid stripping solutions were studied. Groups of uranium wafers of surface areas approximately 0.033 sq ft were anodically etched and stripped. From the losses in weight observed, it was concluded that at least three square feet of uranium may be anodized per liter of phosphoric-hydrochloric acid solution without regeneration.
