An analysis of a piston-type gas-generator engine

Description: From Introduction: "An analysis of an engine having a division of work such that the power of the reciprocating engine is just sufficient to drive the compressor is reported herein. This combination of a reciprocating-type internal-combustion engine that drives its own supercharging compressor and generates gas for further expansion through a turbine will be called a piston-type gas generator in this report."

An application of Falkner's surface-loading method to predictions of hinge-moment parameters for swept-back wings

Description: Report presenting an application of the Falkner lifting-surface-theory method to predicting hinge-moment and lift parameters for sweptback plan forms in order to develop an analogue to the existing lifting-surface-theory procedure for prediction of these parameters on unswept plan forms. For two specific plan forms, the hinge-moment predictions based on the Falkner method were not in good agreement with experimental values.

Correlation of Chemical Analyses on Graphite Bars and Test Pile Results

Description: From abstract: "The chemical analyses of graphite test bars obtained from National Carbon Company and the analyses performed by the Hanford Works Laboratories Division do not correlate significantly with the test pile results, nor do the chemical analyses obtained from National Carbon Company agree with those done in the Handford Works Laboratories. Chemical results obtained at Hanford on samples taken lengthwise from individual bars correlated significantly with the individual test pile result… more

Degradation of Isotopic Lactate and Acetate

Description: A scheme of glucose degradation has been validated by the use of intermediates of known isotopic composition. In this scheme: glucose {yields} lactic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-3,4) + acetic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-2,5) + acetone {yields} iodoform (C-1,6) + acetate (C-1,6; 2,5), it was found that (a) in the oxidation of lactic acid, approximately 4.7% of the acetic acid was oxidized to CO{sub 2}; and (b) under the conditions prescribed, BaCO{sub 3} from the degradation of Ba acetate containe… more

Diameter Measurements of Slugs Before and After Prolonged Heat Treatment

Description: Abstract: "Diameter measurements of 25 slugs taken before and after a prolonged heat treatment showed no evidence of differences that would indicate blistering. The average effects of the treatment was different for the various slugs. Large differences in diameter measurements between slugs. Large differences in diameter between slugs and significant differences between indices and positions were found."

Directive No. HEW-77

Description: As work on the Columbia Basin irrigation project on the Columbia River is in the initial stages, the question of the effect of this project of the mineral content of the Columbia River has been raised. As an increase in dissolved mineral matter would seem to be likely, it was felt that quantitative estimate of the magnitude of this increase would be important, specifically with reference to the retaining of the demineralization plant at 100-D Area. Accordingly, a study has been made of the prob… more

Ditching Tests of a 1/20-Scale Model of the Northrop B-35 Airplane

Description: "Tests of a 1/20-scale dynamically similar model of the Northrop B-35 airplane were made to study its ditching characteristics. The model was ditched in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated during the investigation. The ditching characteristics were determined by visual observation and from motion-picture records and time-history acceleration records" (p. 1).

Effect of Rotor-Blade Twist and Plan-Form Taper on Helicopter Hovering Performance

Description: Note presenting a theoretical analysis of the hovering performance of rotors with various combinations of twist and plan-form taper in order to estimate the effects of blade twist and taper on rotor efficiency in hovering. The calculations were made with the aid of a strip-analysis procedure similar to that used in propeller analysis, the comparisons being made for rotors of equal solidity.

Effect of Turbine Axial Nozzle-Wheel Clearance on Performance of Mark 25 Torpedo Power Plant

Description: "Investigations were made of the turbine from a Mark 25 torpedo to determine the performance of the unit with three different turbine nozzles at various axial nozzle-wheel clearances. Turbine efficiency with a reamed nondivergent nozzle that uses the axial clearance space for gas expansion was little affected by increasing the axial running clearance from 0.030 to 0.150 inch. Turbine efficiency with cast nozzles that expanded the gas inside the nozzle passage was found to be sensitive to increa… more

The Effect of Wind Bending Deflection on the Rolling Moment Due to Sideslip

Description: Note presenting a method for calculating the effect of wing flexibility on the rolling moment due to sideslip for wings of various aspect ratios and taper ratios when different shapes of the bending-deflection curve are assumed. The shape of the deflection curve is shown to be unimportant, the main factor being the amount of wing-tip deflection.

The Estimation of Heats of Formation

Description: The procedure for estimation of heats of formation of compounds is illustrated by discussion of compounds of several of the elements of the actinide series. The procedure is particularly suited for lanthanide and actinide elements because of the similarity of the ionic radii and types of bonding.
