Advanced deformation process modeling

Description: Progress was made in achieving a comprehensive and coherent description of material behavior in deformation processing. The materials included were metals, alloys, intermetallic compounds, arbitrary lattice structure, and metal matrix composites. Aspects of behavior modeled included kinetics of flow and strain hardening, as well as recrystallization and the various anisotropies of strength and compliance. Highlights include a new prediction of the limiting strength of materials at high temperat… more

Description of hardening curves of fcc single- and polycrystals

Description: Stress-strain curves are analyzed over their entire strain region and over a wide range of temperatures to arrive at a general analytic description of work-hardening curves. The data were obtained with fcc single and polycrystals, but there is experimental and theoretical evidence that the principles of the analysis are also applicable for other crystal structures and even for more complex technical materials. 9 figs, 1 table, 46 refs. Development of local shear bands and orientation gradients in fcc polycrystals

Description: A finite element formulation which derives constitutive response from crystal plasticity theory is used to examine localized deformation in fcc polycrystals. The polycrystals are simple, idealized arrangements of grains. Localized deformations within individual grains lead to the development of domains that are separated by boundaries of high misorientation. Shear banding is seen to occur on a microscopic scale of grain dimensions. The important consequences of these simulations are that the pr… more

Dislocation sources in ordered intermetallics

Description: An overview on the current understanding of dislocation sources and multiplication mechanisms is made for ordered intermetallic alloys of the L1{sub 2}, B2, and D0{sub 19} structures. In L1{sub 2} alloys, a large disparity of edge/screw segments in their relative mobility reduces the efficiency of a Frank-Read Type multiplication mechanism. In Fe-40%Al of the B2 structure, a variety of dislocation sources are available for <111> slip, including ones resulting from condensation of thermal vacanc… more

Hardening, recovery, and creep in fcc mono- and polycrystals. [Strain hardening and softening superposition, strain-rate dependence]

Description: It is shown that the Bailey-Orowan approach to simultaneous strain hardening and recovery is in conflict with experimental results on the work-hardening behavior of many fcc mono- and polycrystals, and therefore should not be used in creep theories either. A more promising approach is the superposition of strain hardening and strain softening, a term used for mechanically rather than thermally activated recovery processes. The strain-rate dependence of the mechanical properties is then characte… more
