Effects of Small Angles of Sweep and Moderate Amounts of Dihedral on Stalling and Lateral Characteristics of a Wing-Fuselage Combination Equipped With Partial- and Full-Span Double Slotted Flaps

Description: "Tests of a wing-fuselage combinations incorporating NACA 65-series airfoil sections were conducted in the NACA 19-foot pressure tunnel. The investigation included the tests with flaps neutral and with partial- and full-span double slotted flaps deflected to determine the effects of (1) variations of wing sweep between -4 degrees and 8 degrees on stalling and lateral stability and control characteristics and (2) variations of dihedral between 0 degree and 6.75 degrees on lateral stability chara… more

Electrolytic Production of Uranium from Solutions of its Tribromide in Fused Salts

Description: Abstract. the electrodeposition of uranium metal, in the form of tree-like deposits, from molten strontium halide baths is described. Under the best conditions studied, approximately 40% recovery is attained. Freedom from side-reactions of the reduced uranium with anode products and/or refractory materials, and high cathode current densities appear to be essential to the success of the process. the refining of uranium under similar conditions appears to occur quite readily, with approximatel… more

Fission Product Poisoning in a Pile

Description: Abstract. The effect of the neutron flux on the relative importance of different fission product poisons is discussed. The general expression for the poising of a fission product is given with the various equations for special cases of interest. The formulae are applied to the problem of finding the poisoning due to fission products at the end of one day in a pile operating with a flux of 4 x 10(14) neutrons/cm(2)/soc. These results are summarized in the table on page 12. Appendix I contains a … more

The Flow of a Compressible Fluid Past a Circular Arc Profile

Description: "The Ackeret iteration process is utilized to obtain higher approximations than that of Prandtl and Glauert for the flow of a compressible fluid past a circular arc profile. The procedure is to expand the velocity potential in a power series of the camber coefficient. The first two terms of the development correspond to the Prandtl-Glauert approximation and yield the well-known correction to the circulation about the profile" (p. 385).

Project 9536 HEW Building 105: Conference on welding design and technique

Description: On February 4 at a conference in T.C. Gary`s office attended by Messrs. Wood, Gary, H.T. Daniels, Burns and C.R. Johnson, the design of the strap plates on the front and rear shields of the pile was discussed from the standpoint of welding technique in the field. Discussion of the design centered about the plug welding of the plates to the Laminated blocks and the ability of the field to perform this work properly. It was decided that welding specialists should be consulted prior to the beginni… more

Sealing of Holes in Aluminum Sheet by Oxidation

Description: Aluminum oxide occupies a larger volume than the aluminum it contains would fill as metal, consequently, the assumption has been made that holes in metallic aluminum would close by a sufficient amount of oxidation. Therefore, we were asked to investigate the rate of plug formation under conditions to be expected in the pile. For the latter we were requested to approach the pile conditions as nearly as we could by employing the Chicago cyclotron. It seems to us that the problem divides itself in… more

[Typed version: Letter from Carolyn R. Itri to Private Nicholas C. Soviero, August 14, 1944]

Description: Typed version: A love letter from Carolyn R. Itri to her future husband, Nicholas C. Soviero. The letter reads, "I was very lucky today and started the week right. I got a letter from you this morning & and a V mail this afternoon". The letter continues with a description of a photo that was enclosed in the original letter and a discussion of how Nicholas should write to his mother and father more frequently as Carolyn doesn't want his mother to be hurt. The letter coincides with an anniversary… more

Uranium Oxide Slurry Pumping Experiments

Description: Abstract: Experiments on colloid milling and pumping show that uranium trioxide, when carefully dehydrated, can be dispersed in water to form a relatively stable slurry, suitable for a homogeneous slurry pile. At temperatures considerably below those of anticipated pile operation particle size growth occurs attended by increase in settling rate and decrease in viscosity. Theses properties of the slurries may be strongly affected by impurities present as well as by special operating condition… more
