Description: An 80 Mw aqueous homogeneous burner reactor suitable for producing 20 Mw of electricity at a remote location is described. The reactor fuel consists of a light water uranyl sulfate solution which acts as its own moderator and coolant. The uranium is highly enriched (93% U/sup 235/). The primary considerstions for the design were simplicity and reliability of the components, automatic demand control and safe for any load change, full xenon override not required, possibility of construction within the immediate future, and economic operation not the cortrolling factor. Reasonably complete studies are presented for the reactor physics, safety, stability, chemistry, hent transfer, and operation of the system. (auth)

Aerodynamic heating of a thin, unswept, untapered, multiweb, aluminum-alloy wing at Mach numbers up to 2.67 as determined from a free-flight investigation of a rocket-propelled model

Description: From Introduction: "The heat-transfer data calculated from measured temperatures are compared with values calculated by the theory of Van Driest for a flat plate with laminar and turbulent boundary layers. In addition, the heat-transfer data from the flight tests are compared with data obtained from the Langley Structures Research Division of ground tests of an identical wing at a Mach number approximately equal to 1.99 in the pre-flight jet of the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Station at Wallops Island, Va. The stream static pressure is maintained at about 1 atmosphere, the free-stream temperature at about 75^o F, and the stagnation temperature at approximately 500 ^o F (ref.1)."

Airplane Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence for Altitudes Between 20,000 and 55,000 Feet Over the Western Part of the United States

Description: Report presenting a sample of data on atmospheric turbulence on Lockheed U-2 airplanes during research flights. The intensity, amount, and extent of atmospheric turbulence observed in the United States is in good agreement with data from England and Western Europe. Results regarding overall gust distribution, intensity of turbulence, percent of rough air, and size of turbulent areas are provided.

An Analysis of the Works for Solo Trumpet by Alan Hovhaness

Description: The purpose of this study is to determine the general style characteristics of the works for solo trumpet by Alan Hovhaness, viz., Khrimian Hairig, Overture to Avak, Prayer of Saint Gregory, and Haroutiun. The musical elements of form, melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, texture, and counterpoint are examined objectively in order to determine the essential features of the music. Further consideration is given to the idiomatic use of the solo trumpet in these compositions. Each composition is examined separately, the conclusions and generalizations of the style features being reserved for the final chapter.

Approximate analysis of effects of large deflections and initial twist on torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to thermal stresses

Description: Report presenting an approximate analysis of the nonlinear effects of initial twist and large deflections on the torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to a nonuniform temperature distribution. The results show that the initial twist and applied moments can have significant effects on the changes in stiffness produced by nonuniform heating. Results regarding the general results of equations and comparison with experiment are provided.

A Brief Analog Investigation of Inertia Coupling in Rolling Maneuvers of an Airplane Configuration Using a Variable-Incidence Wing as the Longitudinal Control

Description: "An analog computer study was made in order to investigate the inertia coupling in rolling maneuvers of an airplane configuration utilizing a variable-incidence wing for longitudinal control. A five-degree-of-freedom system of equations was used, and only one set of flight conditions was included in this study. The results, when compared to those for a conventional tail-control airplane, indicated significant advantages for the variable-incidence-wing type of control in reducing undesired dynamic effects during rolling maneuvers" (p. 1).

A comparative study of harmonic tension in Hindemith's piano sonatas and in his theoretical writings

Description: The purpose of this paper will be to compare the Hindemith theory of harmonic tension as set forth in his book, Craft of Musical Composition, with his actual use of harmonic tension in compositional practice. The compositions used for this study are Hindemith's Sonaten für Klavier, published in 1936, consisting of three sonatas*. Although these pieces were published one year before the theory book, it seems reasonable to assume that Hindemith was at least formulating the ideas that would go into his book, and quite possibly was already writing it. The copyright date of the book is 1937. Therefore, any conclusions derived from the following analysis will not be affected to any degree by the time lapse between the writing of the two works in question. Analysis of the Sonaten für Klavier by Paul Hindemith reveals the fact that each of the sonatas is very different from the other two; hence, conclusions which apply to all three works are not generally possible.
