Bodies of revolution having minimum drag at high supersonic airspeeds

Description: Approximate shapes of nonlifting bodies having minimum pressure foredrag at high supersonic airspeeds are calculated. With the aid of Newton's law of resistance, the investigation is carried out for various combinations of the conditions of given body length, base diameter, surface area, and volume. In general, it is found that when body length is fixed, the body has a blunt nose; whereas, when the length is not fixed, the body has a sharp nose. The additional effect of curvature of the flow ov… more

Charge-discharge during pile operation

Description: This document presents a general analysis of charge-discharge during pile operation. It is not a detailed technical, operational, economic, or political analysis but, rather an attempt to cover the subject with a broader viewpoint than is usually prsented in the many detailed reports which have been written in the past five years. This letter is occasioned at this time because efforts are in progress to implement plans for proceeding with the expenditure of substantial amounts of money in order… more

Continuous Denitration Status of Development, January 12, 1955

Description: Experimental studies on continuous denitration performed in 321 Building resulted in the development of an agitated-through-type calciner. The performance of a paddle-agitated 4-in.-diameter by 44-in.-long reactor was sufficiently promising to warrant construction of a 16-in.-diameter by 8 ft.-long semi-plant scale model. This progress report summarizes the results of studies to date employing the semi-plant scale calciner.

A critical mass study of Hood No. 5 and the filter boat cleaning and testing hood in the 234-5 Building

Description: Calculations are presented for the estimated minimum critical mass of Pu that would be allowed in Hood No. 5 and the filter boat cleaning and testing hood of the Plutonium Finishing Plant. Hood No. 5 contains the overflow tank and two vacuum traps. Limits are given for several pile exposure rates. These limits do not allow the approach of personnel into Hood No. 5 when these vessels are full.

Detection of Airborne Beryllium Dust : Monthly Report Covering the Period from May1 to June 1, 1955

Description: During this period a prototype gamma ray detection system was assembled and data was obtained on samples of beryllium salts on filter paper under a variety of conditions. Ordinarily either a scaler-register combination or the CRM-recorder combination would be sufficient for obtaining data. Both units have been used here in order to utilize the particular advantages of each system. The scaler-register unit was employed for obtaining precise data over short intervals while the CRM-recorder was us… more

Determination of Plutonium and Uranium in Scrup Dissolver Solutions

Description: Methods for the determination of plutonium and uranium in highly radioactive scrup dissolver solutions have been developed. Plutonium was separated from the dissolver solutions by solvent-extraction and ion-exchange techniques and determined by potentiometric titration. Uranium was separated by ion exchange and determined by potentiometric titration. Solutions that were similar to the actual dissolver solutions and that contained known amounts of plutonium and uranium were analyzed by these met… more

The Evaluation of Air Samples Containing Thorium and Daughter Products

Description: Equations for the quantity of thorium daughters on an air sampler after various times of collection and decay are derived and evaluated. The most limiting assumption is the constant concentration over the sampling period. Applications of these equations to measurement of decay curves, alpha energy analysis and the simultaneous solution involving measurements at the three decay times are discussed.

Examination of Irradiated Uranium-Chromium Alloy Slugs

Description: Production Test 313-105-13-M authorized the irradiation of a uranium - 0.4 atomic per cent chromium alloy to determine the relative stability of this material during irradiation. Five tubes, each containing six four-inch alloy slugs, were irradiated to exposures ranging from 156 to 834 MWD/T. This report describes the results of the visual examination of the bare uranium alloy slugs and the results of the test to determine slug breaking strength. The breaking strength of both the U-Cr alloy slu… more

Experimental Flutter Results for Cantilever-Wing Models at Mach Numbers Up to 3.0

Description: Report presenting experimental flutter testing at Mach numbers up to 3.0 using cantilever-wing models with 0 to 60 degree sweepback and 60 degree delta-wing models. The main variables explored were the high Mach number and center-of-gravity location on flutter trends. The theoretical results for flutter analyses were noted to be lower than the experimental results.

Feasibility report installation of the 231 Building Isolation Process in 224-T

Description: The Isolation Process, contained in the 231 Building, has an operational cost of approximately $35,000 per month. The location of this process in the 224-T Building would result in lower manpower requirements and effect an estimated savings of $5,000 per month. This report details study made to determine the feasibility and approximate cost for installing this process in 224-T.

Free-Spinning-Tunnel Investigation to Determine the Effect of Spin-Recovery Rockets and Thrust Simulation on the Recovery Characteristics of a 1/21-Scale Model of the Chance Vought F7U-3 Airplane, TED No. NACA AD 3103

Description: From Summary: "An investigation of a 1/21-scale model of the Chance Vought F7U-3 airplane in the combat-loading condition has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel. The recovery characteristics of the model were determined by use of spin-recovery rockets for the erect and inverted spinning condition. The rockets were so placed as to provide either a yawing or rolling moment about the model center of gravity. Also included in the investigation were tests to determine the eff… more

Homogenous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending April 30, 1955

Description: Part I. Experimental Reactors: The effect of prompt-neutron lifetime upon reactor safety was investigated for the HRT. It was found that for a given pressure rise the allowable rate of reactivity addition was relatively insensitive to the average prompt-neutron lifetime, although the rate de creased somewhat with decreasing lifetime for the higher pressure rises. With only source neutrons present and the reactor initially subcritical, the allowable rate was practically independent of the initia… more
