Optical Property Study of 2D Graded Photonic Super-Crystals for Photon Management

Description: In this dissertation, we study the optical property of 2D graded photonic super-crystals (GPSCs) for photon management. We focused primarily on manipulation and control of light by using the newly discovered GPSCs which present great opportunity for electromagnetic wave control in photonic devices. The GPSC has been used to explore the superior capability of improving the light extraction efficiency of OLEDs. The enhancement of extraction efficiency has been explained in term of destructive int… more

Enabling instrumentation and technology for 21st century light sources

Description: We present the summary from the Accelerator Instrumentation and Technology working group, one of the five working groups that participated in the BES-sponsored Workshop on Accelerator Physics of Future Light Sources held in Gaithersburg, MD September 15-17, 2009. We describe progress and potential in three areas: attosecond instrumentation, photon detectors for user experiments, and insertion devices.

An Upgrade for the Advanced Light Source

Description: One of the first third-generation synchrotron light sources, the ALS, has been operating for almost a decade at Berkeley Lab, where experimenters have been exploiting its high brightness for forefront science. However, accelerator and insertion-device technology have significantly changed since the ALS was designed. As a result, the performance of the ALS is in danger of being eclipsed by that of newer, more advanced sources. The ALS upgrade that we are planning includes full-energy, top-off in… more

Rigid, adjustable support of aligned elements via six struts

Description: At particle accelerators around the world, a great deal of effort is expended on determining precise component locations in space. Much less effort is spent on the design of systems to precisely and solidly locate these components in space, once one has the ability to know where they are. Unfortunately, there are many inadequate ways of adjustably mounting position sensitive beam line hardware, and only a few methods which work well. Traditional jacking screw and shimming support systems are of… more

Microstructure evolution of tin under electromigration studied bysynchrotron X-Ray micro-diffraction

Description: Under constant current electromigration, white tin(?-Sn)exhibited a resistance drop of up to 10 percent. It has a body centertetragonal (BCT) structure, and the resistivity along the aand b axes is35 percent smaller than that along the c axis.Microstructure evolutionunder electromigration could be responsible for the resistance drop.Synchrotron radiation white beam x-ray microdiffraction was used to studythis evolution. Both stress and grain orientation was studied.Grain-by-grain analysis was o… more

Correlation between exchange bias and pinned interfacialspins

Description: Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have detectedthe very interfacial spins that are responsible for the horizontal loopshift in three different exchange bias sandwiches, chosen because oftheir potential for device applications. The "pinned" uncompensatedinterfacial spins constitute only a fraction of a monolayer and do notrotate in an external magnetic field since they are tightly locked to theantiferromagnetic lattice. A simple extension of the Meiklejohn and Beanmodel is proposed to … more

National Synchrotron Light Source 2010 Activity Report

Description: This is a very exciting period for photon sciences at Brookhaven National Laboratory. It is also a time of unprecedented growth for the Photon Sciences Directorate, which operates the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and is constructing NSLS-II, both funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science. Reflecting the quick pace of our activities, we chose the theme 'Discovery at Light Speed' for the directorate's 2010 annual report, a fiscal year bookended by October 2009 and Septemb… more

Crossed elliptical polarization undulator

Description: The first switching of polarization direction is possible by installing two identical helical undulators in series in a same straight section in a storage ring. By setting each undulator in a circular polarization mode in opposite handedness, one can obtain linearly polarized radiation with any required polarization direction depending on the modulator setting between two undulators. This scheme can be used without any major degradation of polarization degree in any low energy low emittance sto… more

RECENT BEAM MEASUREMENTS AND NEW INSTRUMENTATION AT THE ADVANCED LIGHT SOURCE

Description: The Advanced Light Source (ALS) in Berkeley was the first of the soft x-ray third generation light source ever built, and since 1993 has been in continuous and successful operation serving a large community of users in the VUV and soft x-ray community. During these years the storage ring underwent through several important upgrades that allowed maintaining the performance of this veteran facility at the forefront. The ALS beam diagnostics and instrumentation have followed a similar path of inno… more
