Recent Developments in Fire-Resistant Hydraulic Fluids for Underground Use

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines discussing the use of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids in coal mines. As stated in the summary, "this report reviews investigations to determine the fire hazard in coal mining when using flammable petroleum hydraulic oils to actuate mining equipment and summarizes research by the Bureau of Mines and industry on fire-resistant hydraulic fluids" (p. 1). Evaluation of Fire Hazards While Repackaging Plutonium-Contaminated Scrap in Hb-Line

Description: The potential for a fire while repackaging plutonium-contaminated scrap was evaluated. The surface-to-mass ratio indicates the metal alone will not spontaneously ignite. Experimental determination of the shipboard fire environment for simulated radioactive material packages

Description: A series of eight fire tests with simulated radioactive material shipping containers aboard the test ship Mayo Lykes, a break-bulk freighter, is described. The tests simulate three basic types of fires: engine room fires, cargo fires and open pool fires.
