Preliminary Investigation at Low Speeds of Swept Wings in Yawing Flow

Description: Memorandum presenting a wind-tunnel investigation conducted to determine the rotary stability characteristics in yawing flow of a series of untapered wings with angles of sweep of -45, 0, 45, and 60 degrees. The results of the yawing-flow tests indicated that the values of the rotary derivatives agreed fairly well with simple sweep theory for a moderate range of lift coefficients.

De-Icing Effectiveness of External Electric Heaters for Propeller Blades

Effect of Rotor-Blade Twist and Plan-Form Taper on Helicopter Hovering Performance

A Generalized Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Motions and Hydrodynamic Loads Experienced by V-Bottom Seaplanes During Step-Landing Impacts

Description: Note presenting a theoretical investigation made of the motions and hydrodynamic loads experienced by V-bottom seaplanes during the course of a step-landing impact. In the analysis, the primary flow about the immersed portion of a keeled float or hull is considered to occur in transverse flow planes and the virtual-mass concept is applied to calculate the reaction of the water to the motion of the seaplane. The results are presented in the form of dimensionless curves which may be used to predict the behavior of V-bottom seaplanes at all instants during an impact as well as at the particular instants of maximum acceleration, maximum draft, and rebound.

An application of Falkner's surface-loading method to predictions of hinge-moment parameters for swept-back wings

Description: Report presenting an application of the Falkner lifting-surface-theory method to predicting hinge-moment and lift parameters for sweptback plan forms in order to develop an analogue to the existing lifting-surface-theory procedure for prediction of these parameters on unswept plan forms. An investigation of the downwash and wake behind large-scale swept and unswept wings

Description: Report presenting a wind tunnel investigation to determine the downwash angles, dynamic pressure loss, and wake width behind wings with sweep angles of 45, 30, and 0 degrees. Results indicated that the spanwise distribution of downwash was affected by sweep in a manner similar to span loading, increased toward the root by sweepforward and toward the tip by sweepback.

Sound-Level Measurements of a Light Airplane Modified to Reduce Noise Reaching the Ground

Description: "An Army liaison-type airplane, representative of personal airplanes in the 150 to 200 horsepower class, has been modified to reduce propeller and engine noise according to known principles of airplane-noise reduction. Noise-level measurements demonstrate that, with reference to an observer on the ground, a noisy airplane of this class can be made quiet -- perhaps more quiet than necessary. In order to avoid extreme and unnecessary modifications, acceptable noise levels must be determined" (p. 115).
