Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Summary Report

Description: The potential usefulness of approximately 1300 radioactive isotopes as a heat source for the thermoelectric generator was investigated. Only 47 were found to have the proper characteristics of high specific activity and usable haif-life combined with an easily absorbable radiation. These isotopes are discussed showing possible sources of supply, the hazards involved, and the expected performance. Three large Po/sup 210/ heat sources were designed and constructed (for battery use), including one… more

The Preparation, Properties, and Uses of Americium-241, Alpha-, Gamma-, and Neutron Sources

Description: A study was made of the preparation of alpha, gamma, and neutron sources using the long-lived radioisotope of americium, Am/sup 241/. Americium-241 is an artificiallyproduced radioelement which has a half-life of 462 plus or minus 10 years and decays to Np/sup 237/ by alpha emission followed by low-energy gamma emission. The high specific activity of americium-241 (7.0 x 10/sup 9/ d/m/mg) combined with its reasonably long half-life makes it ideally sulted for the preparation of radioactive sour… more

RADIOISOTOPE TECHNIQUES FOR CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL, AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Description: A laboratory manual is given consisting of 14 experiments designed to teach some of the basic fundamentals of the application of radioisotopes, and to introduce the principles of radioisotope technology. The majority of the experiments, while designed to be practical, are planned for scientists having little background in radiochemical and radioisotopc technology, and the remainder are outlined for more advanced personnel. The experiments include isotope production, sample preparation and half … more

The Half-Life and Gamma-Ray Abundance of Cs-137

Description: The half life of cesium-137 was determined to be 29.2 plus or minus 0.3 years by an all mass spectrometric method. The abundance of the 662 Kev gamma- ray in the decay scheme was found to be 0.82 plus or minus 0.03 per beta disintegration. In the course of the work, the isotopic distribution of natural barium was determined with improved accuracy to be (72.11 plus or minus 0.06)% 138, (11.18 plus or minus 0.05)% 137, (7.77 plus or minus 0.02)% 136, (6.42 plus or minus 0.03)% 135, (2.33 plus or … more

Mound Laboratory Progress Report for January 1961

Description: Work was begun to determine the physical properties of mica-filled diallyl phthalate. Both the impact and tensile strength values compared favorably wlth asbestos-filled DAP formulatlons. The tensile values compared with the upper limit tensile strength values for asbestos-filled formulations. Adiprene-ferric acetyl acetonate-polyol systems were developed as adhesives and their properties studied. Sources of kilogram quantities of Th/sup 2//sup 3//sup 0/ were investigated. The samples were anal… more

A High-Speed Readout for Multi-Channel Pulse-Height Analyzers

Description: From American Nuclear Society Meeting, New York, Nov. 1963. In computer-coupled automated activation analysis such as in the Mark II system, conventional methods of data readout impose a serious restriction on the minimum handling time per sample. A data coupler for operating between the data accumulation system and the computer tape unit was developed which contributes nothing to the handling time per sample, does not distort the data, and prepares the data for direct computer entry. In additi… more

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR JUNE 1963

Description: 3 8 ; 9 4 5 7 5 C 9 E ; < : 7over a 1456-day period. The half life was calculated to be 12.355 plus or minus 0.0l0 years, based on measurements in three calorimeters. The yields of /sup 208/Po and /sup 209/Po from the irradiation of multicurie quantities of /sup 210/Po were calculated. Production of small quantities of /sup 208/Po and /sup 209/Po is possible by the (n,xn) reaction; however, large quantities of /sup 210/Po would be present in the /sup 208/Po--/sup 209/Po sample. On the basis of … more

Electron-Voltaic Cell Study

Description: The properties of Si, GaAs, Ge, and possible beta sources were considered, together with radiation damage to the three materials. Additionally, the characteristics of p-n junction cells under beta activity were derived, and the characteristics of GaAs and Si cells were obtained experimentally. The results indicate that a nuclear battery using GaAs or n-p Si cells with Pm/sup 147/ as the source would operate for 5 to 10 yr with very little radiation damage. Cell characteristics for a given sourc… more

THEORY OF ELECTRON EMISSION WIDTHS

Description: An expression for the reduced width of an auto-ionizing level was derived using the R-matrix theory. The electron emission widths were calculated as a function of channel radius. By choosing an appropriate value of channel radius it was found that the electron emission width is 5.885 x 10/sup -3/ ev for an outgoing p electron of kinetic energy 1.162 ev. This width is about 3000 times larger than the partial radiation width of the level. It is shown that certain selection rules cause some of the… more

The Neutron-Deficient Yttrium Isotopes Y$sup 82$, Y$sup 83$, and Y$sup 8$$Sup 4$

Description: Divergences in values of the half life of Y/sup 85/ have been resolved by discovery of a new sup 85/ isomeric state, and the half lives of Y/sup 84/ , Y/sup 83/, and Y/sup 82/ have been evaluated. Powdered arsenic metal targets were bombarded in the Berkeley heavy-ion linear accelerator with carbon ions. Determination by direct decay gives a half life of 39 plus or minus 1 min for Y/ sup 84/. Timed chemical separation values of 9 plus or minus 3 min and 8 plus or minus 2 min were obtained for Y… more
