"Spall-4:" An Energy-Based Model for Spall

Description: An energy-dependent bond-breaking model for material failure is described. The logic of the scheme has its roots in that of the Cochran- Banner spall model [Cochran and Banner, 1977], but significant differences have been introduced. Material zones undergoing tensile stress incur damage according to an exponential expression related to the familiar Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. A scheme for converting the damage calculated in specified contiguous zones of the mesh into a 'strength factor' for… more

Characterization of Adaptive Optics at Keck Observatory

Description: In this paper, the adaptive optics (AO) system at Keck Observatory is characterized. The AO system is described in detail. The physical parameters of the lenslets, CCD and deformable mirror, the calibration procedures and the signal processing algorithms are explained. Results of sky performance tests are presented: the AO system is shown to deliver images with an average Strehl ratio of up to 0.37 at 1.59 {micro}m using a bright guide star. An error budget that is consistent with the observed … more

Study of the hydrodynamics of single bubble sonoluminescence

Description: The study of sonoluminescence has been under taken to determine the mechanisms for the production of the short burst of light that arises in an acoustically driven water cell. The investigations have reached a state of understanding where the underlying physical processes causing the conversion of acoustic energy to radiation can now be successfully simulated. Further, the effort has led to substantial outreach to the community including undergraduate student, post-graduate students, and profes… more

Ancient Glass Studies: Potential Archaeological Sites Relevant to Low-Activity Waste Disposal at Hanford

Description: In this document we identify several archaeological sites that may be of use in validating the ILAW performance assessment. Glasses that might be recovered at these sites would be recovered with the surrounding soil. This soil would be analyzed and the distribution of elements released from the glass to the soil would be mapped. Coincidence of the actual migration and the modeled migration would constitute a validation exercise of the current performance assessment model for the Hanford Site.

DIII-D Experiments and Modeling of Core Confinement in Quiescent Double Barrier Plasmas

Description: We continue to explore Quiescent Double Barrier (QDB) operation on DIII-D to address issues of critical importance to internal transport barrier (ITB) plasmas. QDB plasmas exhibit both a core transport barrier and a quiescent, H-mode edge barrier. Both experiments and modeling of these plasmas are leading to an increased understanding of this regime and it's potential advantages for advanced-tokamak (AT) burning-plasma operation. These near steady plasma conditions have been maintained on DIII-… more

A Comparison of Ultrasound Tomography Methods in Circular Geometry

Description: Extremely high quality data was acquired using an experimental ultrasound scanner developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory using a 2D ring geometry with up to 720 transmitter/receiver transducer positions. This unique geometry allows reflection and transmission modes and transmission imaging and quantification of a 3D volume using 2D slice data. Standard image reconstruction methods were applied to the data including straight-ray filtered back projection, reflection tomography, and d… more

Building the World's Fastest Linux Cluster

Description: Imagine having 2,304 Xeon processors running day and night solving complex problems. With a theoretical peak of 11.2 teraflops, that is just what the MCR cluster at Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL) is doing. Over the past several years, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has deployed a series of increasingly large and powerful Intel-based Linux clusters. The most significant of these is a cluster known as the MCR (Multiprogrammactic Capability Resource). With 1,152 Intel Xeon (2.4 GH… more
