PARTICLE DETECTORS BASED ON NOBLE LIQUIDS

Description: In order to build a thin particle detector with 10 micron spatial resolution and automatic readout, the avalanche of ionization electrons in high electric fields in liquid argon and liquid xenon has been studied. We present a scheme using an array of points that could be used to make a reliable liquid argon filled detector. The avalanche pulses in liquid xenon have a rise time more than three orders of magnitude faster than that in liquid argon, suggesting that the positive charge carriers are … more

The Absolute Yield of the Ferrous Sulfate Oxidation Reaction

Description: The absolute yield of the ferrous sulfate oxidation reaction, under the influence of ionizing radiation, has been determined. A polystyrene, parallel plate ionization chamber, filled with argon, nitrogen, or air, was used to measure the energy absorbed per unit volume of the solution through the application of the Bragg-Gray principle. The ionization current was extrapolated to zero chamber spacing. In related experiments the average ionization potential of polystyrene was determined to be 34.3… more

Cesium-plasma-conductivity enhancement in the advanced thermionic energy converter. Final report

Description: Two methods of plasma conductivity enhancement in a cesium vapor thermionic energy converter have been studied. The first involved resonance photoabsorption of several cesium lines and the second utilized cesium plasma sustenance by application of microwave power. An extensive study of ionization processes in a cesium discharge in the presence of resonance ionization was made. Calculations were made of expected percentage excitation levels for several cesium resonance transitions for different … more

Decay Characteristics of Ξ- and Ξ° Hyperons

Description: In our continuing study of (K- + p) interactions at 2.24 Bev/c in the Brookhaven National Laboratory 20" Hydrogen Bubble Chamber, we have accumulated approximately 332 Ξ- → Λ + π- decays and 34 Ξ°→Λ + π° decays. The cascade hyperons were produced in the following reactions: [reactions not transcribed].

A Micro-Ionisation Chamber for Roentgen and Radium Rays

Description: While the dosage for radium therapy has been advanced to a point where its practical and theoretical solution has been attained, the same is not true in the field of radium therapy. This article is based on the international r-unit (Stockholm 1928) which has provided roentgenologists a foundation on which to build.

Study of Negative Ions With a Cycloidal Instrument

Description: "Dissociative attachment studies were made for the production of H/sup -/ and 0/sup -/ ions in the electron bombardment of water vapor with a cycloidal instrument to compare the results with previous data obtained with mass spectrometers and total ionization tubes. The peak heights were studied as a function of spectrometer operating conditions to obtain confidence in the present data with regard to the relative intensities. Graphical representations are included of the results along with a sch… more
