UDEC simulation of Triaxial Testing of Lithophysal Tuff

Description: The current conceptual design for the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain Nevada includes placing most of the facility in lithophysal Tuff. Because it is difficult to conduct standard confined triaxial laboratory tests on lithophysal tuff, it was decided to use UDEC to conduct numerical triaxial testing of simulated lithophysal tuff samples to supplement existing uniaxial compression data. The results of these numerical experiments are intended to provide guidance on the variabi… more

Subsurface Geotechnical Parameters Report

Description: The Yucca Mountain Project is entering a the license application (LA) stage in its mission to develop the nation's first underground nuclear waste repository. After a number of years of gathering data related to site characterization, including activities ranging from laboratory and site investigations, to numerical modeling of processes associated with conditions to be encountered in the future repository, the Project is realigning its activities towards the License Application preparation. At… more

Collider scenario implications of ASST Operation

Description: After the achievement of the SSCL`s Congressionally Mandated milestone, the Accelerator System String Test (ASST) half cell under went a series of power tests. These tests involved quenches induced in various configurations and in power levels up to the maximum operation point. These tests have produced data which has defined various parameters and requirements for the individual elements and system.

Full-power test of a string of magnets comprising a half-cell of the Superconducting Super Collider

Description: In this paper we describe the full-powered operation of a string of industrially-fabricated magnets comprising a half-cell of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The completion of these tests marks the first successful operation of a major SSC subsystem. The five 15-m long dipole magnets in the string had an aperture of 50 mm and the single 5-m long quadrupole aperture was 40 mm. Power and cryogenic connections were made to the string through spool pieces that are prototypes for SSC opera… more

Sensitivity of the stability of a waste emplacement drift to variation in assumed rock joint parameters in welded tuff

Description: This report presents the results of a numerical analysis to determine the effects of variation of rock joint parameters on stability of waste disposal rooms for vertical emplacement. Conditions and parameters used were taken from the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation (NNWSI) Project Site Characterization Plan Conceptual Design report (MacDougall et al., 1987). Mechanical results are presented which illustrate the predicted distribution of stress, joint slip, and room deformations for t… more
