Fuel element performance

Description: For some time, it has been considered that cycling natural uranium fuel elements through the {alpha}-{beta} transformation point (approx. 662 C) is a contributing factor in split type ruptures. This hypothesis is based upon the fact that the transition temperature, a one percent increase in volume occurs. It is reasoned that as the uranium hardens under irradiation, it becomes progressively less able to adjust to the severe stresses imposed by the volume change as the material cycles through th… more

Action and Emission Spectra of the Luminescence of Green PlantMaterials

Description: The action and emission spectra of the delayed light emission from Chlorella, Nostoc, and spinach chloroplasts have been measured. The action spectra for Chlorella and for spinach chloroplasts are quite similar to the absorption spectra of these materials. The action spectrum for Nostoc, on the other hand, shows a relatively low activity for chlorophyll and carotenoids and a high activity for phycocyanin. The emission spectra of these materials demonstrates that the luminescence is the result o… more

DELTA-PHASE ZIRCONIUM HYDRIDE AS A SOLID MODERATOR

Description: In a suady of the preparation and properties of deltaphase zirconium hydride it was found that large, sound bodies of the hydride can be prepared by direct combination of the elements if the rate of the reaction is retarded by limiting the supply of available hydrogen. Specimens up to 1-in. diameter were prepared using this technique. Because delta-phase zirconium hydride does not readily form eutectics with iron- and nickel-base alloys below 1800 deg F these materials may be utilized for cladd… more

Cyanide Effects on Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Chlorella

Description: Green algae have been treated with radioactive KCN in an investigation of the effect of cyanide on photosynthesis. A multitude of products have been found to be formed in very short exposures (10 to 15 sec). One of these products has been identified with the product formed when the algae are given radioactive CO{sub 2} and nonradioactive KCN. The same product has been synthesized by a nonenzymatic cyanohydrin addition reaction on ribulose-1, 5-diphosphate. It has been shown to be a 2-carboxy-pe… more

Studies Relating to the Structure of Aluminum Hydride

Description: The object of the work was to determine the molecular structure of AlH/ sub 3/, using the techniques of nuclear spin resonance.'' Attempts to prepare ether-free AlH/sub 3/ that were unsuccessful are described. Also it was not possible to observe the deuterium signal in AlH/sub 3/. It was possible, by the use of the proton signal of the ether in AlH/sub 3/, to obtain the nuclear spin resonance absorption curve for AlH/sub 3/ by subtracting out the contributions of the ether protons to the resona… more

Evaluation of Container Materials for Zircex and Darex Nuclear-Fuel- Recovery Processes

Description: The selection of a suitable material for the processing equipment is most important in fuel-recovery processes. The problem arises because of the aggressive nature of the reagents that must be used for disintegrating or dissolving some spent fuel elements. In this investigation, corrosion tests were made under conditions simulating those that may occur in several proposed processes in order that candidate materials of construction could be evaluated. No material has been found which would allow… more

COMPARISON OF ACTIVE AND INACTIVE URANIUM DIOXIDE-OXYGEN SYSTEMS

Description: Inactive UO/sub 2/ oxidizes at 180 deg C by tbe formation of a tetragonal oxide (U/sub 3/O/sub 7/), which is unsthble, on heating above 300 deg C. The U/sub 3/C/sub 7/ in compositions below UO/sub 2.25/ reacts with UO/sub 2/ to form UC/sub 2+x/ and U/sub 4/O/sub 9/. At compositions above UO/sub 2.25/, the tetragomal phase is stable to 600 deg C. In the homogenized condition, both U/ sub 3/O/sub 7/ and U/sub 4/O/sub 9/ are n-type conductors, while UO/sub 2+x/ is p- type. The solubility limit of … more

183 B-C cross tie justification and scope

Description: After the present solid slugs are replaced with the new I&E elements` in the 105-B reactor, the friction loss for the reactor cooling water will be decreased with a resulting opportunity for increase in flow through the reactor. The amount that this flow could be increased is limited by the capacity of the B water plant as well as the reactor itself. It is possible that there will be a shortage of filtered water at 183-B during the critical periods of each year. To overcome this possible shorta… more
