Fuel element performance

Description: For some time, it has been considered that cycling natural uranium fuel elements through the {alpha}-{beta} transformation point (approx. 662 C) is a contributing factor in split type ruptures. This hypothesis is based upon the fact that the transition temperature, a one percent increase in volume occurs. It is reasoned that as the uranium hardens under irradiation, it becomes progressively less able to adjust to the severe stresses imposed by the volume change as the material cycles through the {alpha}-{beta} transformation point. Failure finally occurs by a splitting of the core. The IPD is now interested in evaluating some of the effects of reactor operation upon fuel performance. It appears that the life of solid fuel elements may be prolonged if sudden changes in reactor operation can be minimized. It is the purpose of this report to bring to the attention of FPD management the new ideas being developed in the IPD on split type failures and to point out the effect such thinking may have on future fuel element development activities. Based on a discussion with personnel in PID, there is reasonable hope that the performance of solid fuel elements will not be limited by the {alpha}-{beta} transformation, and that the solid geometry can be used to advantage in all HAPO production reactors.

Report on discussion of Pinex experiment with J-12 group at Los Alamos

Description: Plans for participation in Operation Hardtack include performance of a Pinex experiment on three barge-based events: Nutmeg, Hickory, and Juniper. The J-12 group at Los Alamos has been planning for a group of similar experiments. Inclusion of Pinex in the Hardtack diagnostic program occurred considerably later; also, J-12 has successfully carried out two Pinex experiments during Operation Plumbbob. This visit was made to take the fullest possible advantage of their experience to date. Discussion of the experiment at these meetings is summarized under five convenient headings: Detector; Pinhole and Collimator Assembly; Alignment; Data Analysis; and Recovery.

Action and Emission Spectra of the Luminescence of Green PlantMaterials

Description: The action and emission spectra of the delayed light emission from Chlorella, Nostoc, and spinach chloroplasts have been measured. The action spectra for Chlorella and for spinach chloroplasts are quite similar to the absorption spectra of these materials. The action spectrum for Nostoc, on the other hand, shows a relatively low activity for chlorophyll and carotenoids and a high activity for phycocyanin. The emission spectra of these materials demonstrates that the luminescence is the result of a transition between the first excited singlet state and the ground state of chlorophyll. Low-temperature studies suggest that the triplet state of chlorophyll is not involved at all in the luminescence of spinach chloroplasts. There is some indication that part of the light emitted from Nostoc is due to a phycocyanin transition.
