Hydrogeologic and Water-Quality Characteristics of the Upper Carbonate Aquifer in Minnesota

Description: Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey began a study in 1980 of the quality of water in the 14 principal aquifers in Minnesota. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study as part of the Underground Injection Control Program, which deals with disposal of liquid wastes beneath land surface. The initial report designated the 14 aquifers and provided general information about their geologic, hydrologic, and water-quality characteristics (Adolphson and others, 1981). This report, one in a series that describes individual aquifers in more detail, concerns the Upper Carbonate aquifer.

A Method for Estimating Ground-Water Return Flow to the Lower Colorado River in the Yuma Area, Arizona and California

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for estimating the amount of subsurface return flow to the Colorado River in the Yuma area. This report presents a method that permits an approximate accounting of ground-water return flow from each side of the Colorado River in Yuma reach. The method presented in this report was developed specifically for application in the Yuma area. The validity of the assumptions inherent in the method was evaluated on the basis of the local hydrologic system. The applicability of the method to other hydrologic systems is not addressed in this report.

A Method for Estimating Ground-Water Return Flow to the Lower Colorado River in the Yuma Area, Arizona and California--Executive Summary

Description: Purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for estimating the amount of subsurface return flow to the Colorado River in the Yuma area. This report presents a method that will permit an accounting of ground-water return flows from each side of the Colorado River in the Yuma reach. The estimates of return flow can be used by water-management agencies in determining return-flow credits for the States of Arizona and California.

Investigation of Waikele Well No. 2401-01, Oahu, Hawaii: Pumping Test, Well Logs and Water Quality

Description: Introduction: A dependable water supply is required for Naval Magazine Lualualei, Waikele Branch. The water supply for Naval Magazine Lualualei, Waikele Branch, Oahu, Hawaii has been dependent on Oahu Sugar Co.'s water for many years. Because the supply of water from Oahu Sugar Co. is not always dependable, in March 1982, the Pacific Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the productivity and water quality of an abandonment Navy well. The well, No. 2401-01, is located in Waikele Gulch near the confluence of Waikele and Kipapa Streams (fig. 1.0-1)

Ground-Water Quality in the Western Snake River Basin, Swan Falls to Glenns Ferry, Idaho

Description: From purposes and approach of study: The primary purposes of this study were to: (1) Define, on a reconnaissance level, current (1980) water-quality conditions in major aquifers (water-yielding rock formations) in the western Snake River basin, Swan Falls to Glenns Ferry; (2) summarize and interpret available geologic and hydrologic data to assist in understanding the natural and man-cause factors that affect present and future understanding the natural and man-caused factors that affect present and future water-quality conditions; and (3) establish a hydrologic data base on which future data can be compared to evaluate changes. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the possible effects percolation of thermal water applied for irrigation may have on the quality of local, less mineralized, nonthermal ground water.
