Endangered But Not Too Late: The State of Digital News Preservation

Description: Right now, a clock is ticking on the longevity of your news content. … For born-digital content, it’s a clock that could strike midnight at any moment when a disk drive or database fails, a power supply dies or a server is corrupted or compromised, wiping out content in the blink of an eye. This report includes a User’s Guide to finding and understanding what’s in each section, followed by a concise Background on how the switch to digital publishing, and the collapse of old business models helped fuel the upheavals that developed into today’s preservation problems. A summary of the Methodology used in this research comes next, followed by the report’s Findings, Recommendations, Conclusion and Appendices.

A Signature Assignment Puts Vegetables on the Line

Description: This is an unpublished manuscript that delves into the use of Signature Assignments (SAs) which are real-world applications that embed curriculum learning objectives in routine classwork and facilitate assessment of outcomes across classes and disciplines. SAs tied to key learning objectives demonstrate student growth and reveal areas where instructional improvement might be needed. Additionally, SAs tied to curriculum objectives contribute to program and university understanding of teaching strategies that promote student success.

Episode 30: Remembering the St. John's Freedmen's Community with Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart

Description: Interview with Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) podcast. In this episode, Susan interviews Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart about their participation in a group research project as students in UNT’s History department. The project focused on a freedmen's community that formed around St. John’s church in Pilot Point, TX. Starting with names etched into the headstones of a neglected cemetery, these students were eventually able to sketch a portrait of a vibrant community of African Americans who lived in North Texas in the early 20th century. Their group then made headlines when they uncovered evidence of racial violence that played a significant role in the community's decline. Emily and Hannah ultimately presented the results of their group's research as an OLLI at UNT class in the Fall 2019 semester.

West Nile Virus risk and susceptibility in central California modeling dataset

Description: The dataset was developed to support research intended to develop a spatially explicit model that explores environmental data related to the risk of exposure to West Nile Virus (WNV), and the susceptibility to WNV disease based on demographic data of the potentially affected population. The model was developed and then tested on census tracts in an identified hot spot of WNV in central California. The dataset contains (1) U.S. Census Bureau 2010 demographic data for 1,133 census tracks in the hotspot, and (2) and average mosquito habitat risk data for each of those census tracks.

A Novel Prodrug Approach for Central Nervous System-Selective Estrogen Therapy

Description: This article gives an overview of the discovery of small-molecule bioprecursor prodrugs carrying the para-quinol scaffold on the steroidal A-ring that are preferentially metabolized in the CNS to the corresponding estrogens. Selected examples are shown to illustrate that, independently of the route of administrations and duration of treatments, these agents produce high concentration of estrogens only in the CNS without peripheral hormonal liability. 10β,17β-Dihydroxyestra-1,4-dien-3-one (DHED) has been the best-studied representative of this novel type of prodrugs for brain and retina health. Specific applications in preclinical animal models of centrally-regulated and estrogen-responsive human diseases, including neurodegeneration, menopausal symptoms, cognitive decline and depression, are discussed to demonstrate the translational potential of their prodrug approach for CNS-selective and gender-independent estrogen therapy with inherent therapeutic safety.

Evaluation of Uniformity of Bamboo Bundle Veneer and Bamboo Bundle Laminated Veneer Lumber (BLVL)

Description: In this article the density uniformity and mechanical properties of bamboo bundle veneers were systematically evaluated by the combination of light transmittance and mechanical stiffness. It was found that the number of broomings, dippings, and high-temperature heat treatments had different effects on the bamboo bundle veneers. On this basis, the uniformity of the density and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimber (BS) that underwent hybrid paving, and the bamboo bundle laminated veneer lumber (BLVL), were analyzed.
