NEPA Project quarterly progress report, April 1--June 30, 1950

Description: Exploration of various types of power plant cycles for nuclear propelled aircraft has been continued during this quarter. The principal current objective of the project is the development of information which will make an intelligent choice of the basic power plant cycle possible. It is still hoped that this choice can be made late in 1950. The survey studies which have been under way for several months continued during the quarter. These consist of analyses and rough preliminary layouts for va… more

Refining of MgX and Other Uranium-Bearing Materials

Description: A study of the effect of feed and ether acidity on the extraction of vanadium and molybdenum from process solutions by ethyl ether is described. Results of batch and continuous extraction tests on the extraction of uranium from process slurries by tributyl phosphate-Gulfspray naphtha are presented, including studies of the effects of feed and scrub acidities on the concurrent extraction of molybdenum. The effect of temperature on the stripping of uranium from tributyl phosphate was studied brie… more

Topical Report on Refining of MgX and Other Uranium-Bearing Materials

Description: This report discusses a study which explores the effects of feed and acidity on extractive methods. From abstract: "Results from fractional precipitation of MgX from dilute sulfuric acid solutions indicate that, in the presence of sufficienct iron, phosphate is precipitated as ferric phosphate, and not as uranyl phosphate."

Theoretical and analog studies of the effects of nonlinear stability derivatives on the longitudinal motions of an aircraft in response to step control deflections and to the influence of proportional automatic control

Description: Through theoretical and analog results the effects of two nonlinear stability derivatives on the longitudinal motions of an aircraft have been investigated. Nonlinear functions of pitching-moment and lift coefficients with angle of attack were considered. Analog results of aircraft motions in response to step elevator deflections and to the action of the proportional control systems are presented. The occurrence of continuous hunting oscillations was predicted and demonstrated for the attitude … more

Interpretation of boundary-layer pressure-rake data in flow with a detached shock

Description: From Summary: "A procedure is presented for determining boundary-layer quantities from pressure-rake data, which include the combined effects of viscous and shock losses. The problem is analyzed using schileren photographs of the shock configuration, the continuity of mass relationship, and the characteristic of the turbulent boundary layer that its outer edge is defined by a rapid change in slope in the Mach number profiles in the vicinity of the edge."
