Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers on Curved Convex Walls

Description: The system of linear differential equations which indicated the approach of separation and the so-called "boundary-layer thickness" by Gruschwitz is extended in this report to include the case where the friction layer is subject to centrifugal forces. Evaluation of the data yields a strong functional dependence of the momentum change and wall drag on the boundary-layer thickness radius of curvature ratio for the wall. It is further shown that the transition from laminar to turbulent flow occurs at somewhat higher Reynolds Numbers at the convex wall than at the flat plate, due to the stabilizing effect of the centrifugal forces.

Investigation of Boundary Layer Transition on Concave Walls

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the transition of the boundary layer from the laminar to the turbulent regime on the concave side of a plate with a radius of curvature of 8.5 feet. Results regarding the mean speed distribution, effect of curvature on the position of the transition point, effect of the pressure gradient on transition, and effect of free stream turbulence on transition are provided.

On Transonic Flow Past a Wave-Shaped Wall

Description: "This report is an extension of a previous investigation (described in NACA rep. 1069) concerned with the solution of the nonlinear differential equation for transonic flow past a wavy wall. In the present work several new notions are introduced which permit the solution of the recursion formulas arising from the method of integration in series. In addition, a novel numerical tests of convergence, applied to the power series (in transonic similarity parameter) representing the local Mach number distribution at the boundary, indicates that smooth symmetrical potential flow past the wavy wall is no longer possible once the critical value of the stream Mach number has been exceeded" (p. 1).

Description: "The equations presented in this report give the interference on the trailing-vortex system of a uniformly loaded finite-span wing in a circular tunnel containing partly open and partly closed walls, with special reference to symmetrical arrangements of the open and closed portions. Methods are given for extending the equations to include tunnel shapes other than circular. The rectangular tunnel is used to demonstrate these methods. The equations are also extended to nonuniformly loaded wings" (p. 361).

Reflection and Transmission of Sound by a Slotted Wall Separating Two Moving Fluid Streams

Description: "The reflection and transmission coefficients have been determined for a plane sound wave incident on a slotted wall separating two moving fluid streams. This acoustics problem is related to the aerodynamic problem of determining the tunnel-wall interference on an oscillating airfoil in a slotted-throat wind tunnel in that the same boundary condition is involved with one of the two streams at the boundary having zero velocity. In the analysis the wall with discrete slots is replaced by an equivalent homogeneous boundary" (p. 1).

Measurements of the effects of wall outflow and porosity on wave attenuation in a transonic wind tunnel with perforated walls

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 5- by 5-inch transonic test section to determine the wave attenuating capabilities of a variety of perforated-wall configurations with and without the use of outflow. Test results indicated that reflected disturbances could be minimized by either varying the outflow through walls of constant porosity or by varying the wall porosity at constant low outflow.
