Effect of synchrotron motion on the closed orbit distortion in crossing beams

Description: When beams collide with non-zero crossing angles, there is a dipole component to the beam-beam force, thus introducing a closed orbit distortion. If the force experienced by a particle is antisymmetric about the collision center, then the distorted orbit still passes through the collision center but with a changed slope, resulting in a shift from the nominal crossing angle. This antisymmetry in the force occurs for coasting beams, while for bunched beams, it is the case for particles at the cen… more

New accelerator projects in America

Description: From third international conference on many-body- reactions; Zakopane, Poland (20 Jun 1972). The NAL Aecelerator project is described. Other new accelerator projects including polarized proton acceleration at the Argonne 2GS, the 2.5 GeV electron-positron colliding beams SPEAR, positron-electron-proton (PEP) colliding beams, and the ISABELLE projects are briefly discussed. STRONG TURBULENCE and THE ANOMALOUS LENGTH OF STORED PARTICLE BEAMS

Description: A dispersion relation, including strong turbulence, is derived for short-wavelength longitudinal self-perturbations of bunched electron beams. The effects of radiation damping and quantum excitation are included. Assuming that turbulence stabilizes coherent oscillations allows the derivation of a formula for bunch length which gives excellent fits to the data from SPEAR. As a special case of the formalism, an integral equation which describes the longitudinal self-perturbations of proton beams … more

Bunch lengthening in SPEAR and extrapolation to PEP

Description: A recent theory of bunch lengthening suggests that it is caused primarily by the combination of many high-frequency resonators which add up to produce an effective broad-band resistive impedance. The ultimate source is thought to be such small chamber discontinuities as vacuum flanges. Since it is the resistive component of the impedance that is responsible, the bunch lengthening should be directly correlated with the heat dissipated in these ring elements. An expression giving this correlation… more

Large-scale digitizer system (LSD) for charge and time digitization in high-energy physics experiments

Description: A large-scale digitizer (LSD) system for acquiring charge and time-of-arrival particle data from high-energy-physics experiments has been developed at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. The objective in this development was to significantly reduce the cost of instrumenting large-detector arrays which, for the 4..pi..-geometry of colliding-beam experiments, are proposed with an order of magnitude increase in channel count over previous detectors. In order to achieve the desired economy (approxima… more

Resistive theory of bunch lengthening

Description: A new theory of bunch lengthening in electron storage rings is proposed. The equilibrium bunch length is that length which stabilizes the bunch against the onset of ''fast'' resistive instability, caused by the combination of many high frequency resonators such as vacuum flanges. The heat dissipated in these impedance sources follows immediately from the bunch length. It is found that the anomalous bunch length is determined by a scaling parameter g = (hVcos phi/sub s/)/I. Lead-Glass Wall addition to the Spear Mark I Magnetic Detector

Description: A ''Lead-Glass Wall,'' consisting of 318 lead-glass Cherenkov shower counters and three wire spark chambers, has been added to one octant of the SPEAR Mark I Magnetic Detector. The wall covers a solid angle of approximately 6 percent of 4..pi.. steradians and has been used to identify and measure the energies of electrons and photons produced in electron-positron collisions. The design, calibration, gain-monitoring, and performance of the system are described.
