Radiation Problems of the Chemical Plant

Description: "Absorption measurements have been made in a large body of water to evaluate the contribution to the radiation intensity produced by the degradation of radiation without absorption. Radiation intensities three times those expected from a simple exponential absorption were found. Scattering from the air of gamma radiation has been measured and has been found to agree satisfactorily with theoretical predictions. The penetration of radiation through curved pipes in shielding has been measured and … more

Pile power level

Description: A memorandum prepared by the Technical Department discussing the technical considerations involved in raising Pile power above the present level of 280 M.W. was discussed. A meeting attended by W. O. Simon, B. H. Mackey, L. Squires, H. Worthington, C. N. Gross, W. E. Jordan and M. H. Smith. The details of this memorandum were reviewed and the plan proposed for operation of the piles subsequent to August 1, 1945 is discussed in this report.

Shielded room measurements, Final report

Description: The attenuation of electro-statically and electro-magnetically shielded rooms in the ``E,`` ``R,`` ``I,`` and ``T`` Buildings was measured so that corrective measure could be taken if the attenuation was found to be low. If remedial measures could not be taken, the shortcomings of the rooms would be known. Also, the men making the measurements should oversee construction and correct errors at the time. The work was performed by measuring the attenuation at spot frequencies over the range of fro… more

Magnesium Oxychloride Cements and Concretes for Pile Shielding

Description: From introduction: "The present report covers the results of an extended investigation of magnesium oxychloride cements and concretes. In this study the effects of the composition of the cement or concrete on its physical and mechanical properties were determined. In addition, the stability of the mixes was observed."

Investigation of Cementitious Materials for Possible Use in Concretes for Pile Shielding

Description: From introduction: "The present report reviews the work conducted on the development of new cements other than magnesium oxychloride during the period from August, 1943, to October 1949. As in the previous reports, the total water contents reported represent the hydrogen combined as water and that which may be combined as a compound other than water."

Trip report: Argonne National Lab., Naval Reactor Division, December 12--13, 1949

Description: This trip was spent in conferences with H. Etherington, A. Amroni, Geo. Anderson, and L.W. Fromm; and in inspection of components now being built for the Navy Test Rig which is to be installed at H Pile. Mr. Anderson believes that the entire assembly will arrive at Hanford between January 16 and 23, 1950. Much has yet to be designed and built, however. Also, certain incompatibilities with the H Pile were pointed out, and will be altered.

Filters in P-10 production hoods

Description: This paper addresses the reported problem of insufficient air flow through the Fiberglas filters for the air inlets in P-10 production hoods. Since it appears that the replacement of the contemplated filters with either louvers or grilles will not impose any forseen difficulties and will definitely assist in the ventilation design, this substitution has been accepted. Air flow through the grilles or louvers is to be designed to attain a minimum lineal velocity of 200 fpm through the openings.
