Quintus Horatius Flaccus [Unbound sheets]

Description: A complete set of unbound sheets of the last printing of the Pickering Horace. The Horace was originally printed by Pickering in 1820 as the first of his Diamond Classics, and are a landmark in the world of miniature books and printing. This set of sheets are a remarkable survival, giving insight into the printing and binding process. The sheets are quarter-sheet impressions, each sheet holding 8 front-and-back leaves (16 pages) of the text. The sheets have been folded into gathers, and lef… more

Strength in Shear of the Thin Curved Sheets of Alclad

Description: "This note is on an investigation made to obtain information on the strength of thin curved sheets of Alclad in shear. Designers may utilize this material as a strength member as well as for a covering for the wings and fuselages. A reduction may then be made in the size of the internal strength members. These experiments were undertaken with the object of securing the maximum value from the metal in this respect" (p. 1).

The Effective Width of Curved Sheet After Buckling

Description: This report describes experiments made for the purpose of ascertaining the effective width of circularly curved sheet under pure flexural stress. A relation for the effective width of curved sheets is established. Experiments were made with circular cylinders compressed in longitudinal direction. The sheets were rigidly built in at the sides parallel to the axis of the cylinder.

Tests of Aluminum-Alloy Stiffened-Sheet Specimens Cut From an Airplane Wing

Description: "The specimens used in the present tests were cut from an actual airplane wing of the stressed-skin type. The specimens thus obtained were not representative of the usual type of laboratory specimens because the stiffeners were not exactly parallel nor evenly spaced and, in one case, the skin consisted of pieces of sheet of different thicknesses. The test data obtained indicate that the buckling strain of stiffened curved sheet can be computed with reasonable accuracy by the equation given by W… more

Large-Deflection Theory of Curved Sheet

Description: Equations are given for the elastic behavior of initially curved sheets in which the deflections are not small in comparison with the thickness, but at the same time small enough to justify the use of simplified formulas for curvature. These equations are solved for the case of a sheet with circular cylindrical shape simply supported along two edges parallel to the axis of the generating cylinder. Numerical results are given for three values of the curvature and for three ratios of buckle lengt… more

Requirements for Auxiliary Stiffeners Attached to Panels Under Combined Compression and Shear

Description: "Panels of aluminum alloy sheets, framed by side and end stiffeners, were subjected to combined loading by means of offset knife edges applying loads to top and bottom end plates with reacting forces against the end plates supplied by laterally acting rollers. The test specimens were 17S-T aluminum alloy shoots 0.040 inch thick in panels of 10-inch width and three different lengths (approximately 10, 26, and 30 inch). Data were obtained for the bowing of transverse and longitudinal ribs of rect… more

Numerical procedures for the calculation of the stresses in monocoques 2: diffusion of tensiles stringer loads in reinforced flat panels with cut-outs

Description: Report presenting experiments with a flat reinforced sheet model, the longitudinals of which were loaded axially. Two groups of sheets, one with one panel and one with two panels, were cut out and the stress distributions in stringers and sheet was measured with electric strain gages.

An empirical formula for the critical shear stress of curved sheets

Description: Report presenting tests to determine the critical shear stress of curved sheets. The empirical formula derived from the tests is applicable to panels with a ratio of radius to thickness of 300 or greater, a central angle of 1 radian or less, and a ratio of arc length to axial length not greater than 1.

Comparative Tests on Extruded 14S-T and Extruded 24S-T Hat-Shape Stiffener Sections

Description: Note presenting an investigation to compare the 14S-T with 24S-T in extruded stiffeners for stiffened flat sheet panels. The tests were made with stiffened flat sheet panels with three hat-shape stiffeners. Data is provided on the strength of the two alloys as well as the effect of sheet thickness on relative stiffener strengths.

Ultimate stresses developed by 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy sheet in incomplete diagonal tension

Description: "Strength tests were made on 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy sheet in diagonal tension. These tests indicated that the ultimate shear stress was essentially independent of the rivet factor if the rivet factor was greater than 0.6, which covers most of the practical range. Curves showing the effect of diagonal tension on the ultimate shear stress in the gross section are presented. These curves supersede those given in NACA TN No. 1364" (p. 1).

Reinforced Circular Cutouts in Plane Sheets

Description: Note presenting an attempt to design the reinforcement of a cutout in a plane sheet in such a way that it is as nearly as possible equivalent to the part of the structure which has been cut out. A perfect equivalence would mean that the stresses and displacements of the structure remain the same as those which would have appeared without the cutout.
