Comprehensive areal model of residential heating demands: data and methods, BNL

Description: Data sources and methodology for modeling annual residential heating demands are described. A small areal basis was chosen, census tract and minor civil division, to permit estimation of demand densities and economic evaluation of community district-heating systems. The demand model was specified for the entire nation in order to permit validation against other published fuel-consumption estimates for 1970. A demand projection model was developed to permit comparison of district-heating with co… more

Energy conservation and solar heating for mobile homes

Description: Project activities consisted of retro-fitting six (6) mobile homes with extensive energy-conservation improvements and installing solar-space-heating systems on four (4) of these homes. The intent of the project was to evaluate the potential of mobile homes as a low-cost energy-efficient housing option for low- to moderate income families. Using both hard and soft data, it is estimated that an average fuel reduction in excess of 35% was achieved by the conservation improvements alone. The proje… more

Passive and hybrid solar manufactured housing and buildings. [Includes architectural drawings]

Description: The final design work on a passive solar two story modular home to be built by Unibilt Industries is summarized. After reviewing alternative insulation, glazing, and water wall schemes, five options were identified for detailed energy use and life cycle cost analysis. Using the PASCALC/SLR analysis procedure, the performance of the base case home and each of the energy conservation options was calculated. (MHR)

Solar preheater for residential heat pumps

Description: The Solar Preheater for Residential Heat PUmps was designed to offset the weakest points in a heat pump system using solar energy. These weak points affect both energy efficiency and comfort, and are: (1) the heat pumps need to defrost its outside coils, and (2) its use of resistance coils when outside air is very cold. While a heat pump can claim close to 100% efficiency in its conversion of electricity to heat, these efficiencies drop way off under the above circumstances. Less dramatic energ… more

Thermal-insulation panels for mobile homes. Final program progress report

Description: The manufacture and installation of the roof panels was accomplished by the Dixie Fiberglass Products (DFP) plant which is located in Winter Garden, Florida. Panels were removed and retained by DFP at the conclusion of the test sequence. Florida Solar Energy Center conducted the test necessary to investigate the effect of a fiberglass skin and polyurethane foam insulation roof panel installation on the cooling loss of a ten-foot wide mobile home structure. Temperature and heat-flow data with a … more

Wind-powered generator. Final report

Description: Completion of a wind energy conversion system for a private home is reported. The system included three blades constructed of an aluminum center with marine plywood sandwiched between the aluminum center and the fiberglass outer covering. The wind turbine drives a 1800 rpm generator by a chain drive mechanism. Battery storage is included. (LEW)

Mission analysis of photovoltaic solar energy systems. Final report. Volume I. Summary

Description: A summary report of a study program whose principal objective was to develop methods for the technical and economic evaluation of potential missions (applications) for photovoltaic solar energy conversion in the southwestern United States in the 1980 to 2000 period is presented. A secondary objective was to apply the methodology, when developed, to the evaluation of a number of illustrative examples of candidate missions in order to obtain at least a preliminary indication of the competitive po… more

Modeling of solar heating and air conditioning. Progress report, October 31, 1974--December 31, 1975

Description: The principal objective of the research is to develop the means to identify and optimize practical systems for heating and cooling of buildings with solar energy in the United States. This will be done through simulation methods. Secondary objectives are to: extend and refine TRNSYS (a modular solar energy system simulation program); develop the means of supporting TRNSYS users in other laboratories; use TRNSYS (and other simulation programs) to develop design procedures for solar heating and c… more

Energy resource alternatives competition. Progress report for the period February 1, 1975--December 31, 1975. [Space heating and cooling, hot water, and electricity for homes, farms, and light industry]

Description: This progress report describes the objectives and results of the intercollegiate Energy Resource Alternatives competition. The one-year program concluded in August 1975, with a final testing program of forty student-built alternative energy projects at the Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The goal of the competition was to design and build prototype hardware which could provide space heating and cooling, hot water, and electricity at a level appropriate to the needs of homes, far… more

Household fuel demand analysis

Description: This study develops econometric models of residential demands for electricity, natural gas, and petroleum products. Fuel demands per household are estimated as functions of fuel prices, per capita income, heating degree days, and mean July temperature. Cross-sectional models are developed using a large data base containing observations for each state and year from 1951 through 1974. Long-run own-price elasticities for all three fuels are greater than unity with natural gas showing the greatest … more
