REPORT ON THE PROCESSING OF PITCHBLENDE

Description: A detailed description of the processing of pitchblende ores used at the Port Hope, Canada, refinery is given including both the recovery and purification of U and Fu. The health hazards present in the processing are discussed, and recommendations are made which will insure adequate health protection. (L.T.W.)

The Distribution of Precious Metals in Various Residues Obtained in the Preparation of Uranyl Nitrate From Pitchblende

Description: A study was made of the distribution of Ag, Au, Bt, and Pd in the residues from an extraction process in which purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ is prepared from a pitchblende ore. The residues studied were the gangue Pb cake, the BaSO/sub 4/ cake, the filtrate boildown cake, the raffinate cake, and the purified UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/. Samples representing three different batches of ore were used. The following conclusions were reached: (1) neither Ag nor Pd are present in the ore in si… more

The X-Ray Spectra of the Last-Row Elements

Description: Abstract: X-ray energy level diagrams as given in the literature are tabulated for radium, thorium and uranium. A level scheme for protoactinium is derived from the published data. After a brief review of the use of X-ray data in studying outer electronic structure, it is pointed out that differences in the X-ray spectra should exist depending on whether the outer electrons are in f or d orbitals. The observed separation of the OI and OII levels in thorium and uranium indicated that the f lev… more

A study of the hands of radiologists

Description: A group of radiologists were studied for evidences of radiation damage to the skin of their hands. The technics used were the same as those used for routine hand studies of Argonne National Laboratory personnel and consist of examination of wax impressions of the finger ridges and examination of photographs of the vessels and Papillae in the nail fold. Of the 323 radiologists examined by the first method 48% were found to have ridge abnormalities. The incidence of abnormality increased with yea… more

Some Excitation Functions of Bismuth

Description: Excitation functions have been measured, using a 38-Mev alpha-beam and a 19-Mev deuteron beam for the following reactions: Bi({alpha},2n)At{sup 211}, Bi({alpha},3n)At{sup 210}, Bi(d,p)Ra E, Bi(d,n)Po{sup 210}, and Bi(d,3n)Po{sup 209}. The results are summarized in Figs. 4 and 5 and Tables I and II. A new isotope of astatine, At{sup 210}, has been identified; this isotope has a half life of 8.3 hr., decaying by K-capture to Po{sup 210} with the emission of a 1.0-Mev gamma-ray and a few conversio… more

Summary report on measurement and control of radioactive particulate contamination for Engineering Division, Atomic Energy Commission

Description: The purpose of this report is to review the characteristics of particulate contamination which set it apart from the other phases of the radiation control program and make it necessary to apply to it different concepts, analytical procedures, and control measures. The program is treated as one in the appraisal and control of dusts and fumes. The fact that the material is radioactive introduces certain new details, but this does not make the problem basically different from others in the field o… more

Quarterly Report for General Research October - November - December, 1949 (Deleted Version)

Description: The extraction of radium from uranium residues was proposed either by the use of the old (Curie) process or by the development and use of a new process. Qualitative procedures for the extraction of radium from pitch-blende are found recorded in the literature but little quantitative data are available. In order to become acquainted with the process and techniques involved, an attempt was made to use the method developed by the Curies, which essentially is being used by the Eldorado Gold Mines, … more

Survey of Processes for Radium Recovery from Pitchblende Ores

Description: This general report on radium summarizes the research work conducted by seven AEC contractors since 1943. The costs to concentrate and purify radium from refinery ore residues are discussed. Desriptions and flow sheets of several commercial processes are included to provide background information.

Studies of the Metabolism of Certain Fission Products and Plutonium

Description: A short survey of some of the metabolic relationships of the elements, cerium, colurbium, plutonium, strontium, yttrium, and zirconium is presented. While the results of internally deposited radium have not been investigated in these experiments, they have been extensively studies by others. Because so much is known of its biological effects, it has been included in this historical survey.
