The trend of contamination in the air, the Columbia River, rain, sanitary water, vegetation, and wastes, at the Hanford Works for the period July, August, September 1947

Description: This report summarizes the contamination observed at the Hanford Works and vicinity for the period July, August, and September, 1947. Daily or weekly trends for all sampling locations as included in previous reports are omitted except in those cases where a true trend can be established. Statistical analysis to determine significant values and differences is used whenever possible. The report is divided into the following topic sections: meteorological -- wind conditions; extent of beta contami… more

Summary report on measurement and control of radioactive particulate contamination for Engineering Division, Atomic Energy Commission

Description: The purpose of this report is to review the characteristics of particulate contamination which set it apart from the other phases of the radiation control program and make it necessary to apply to it different concepts, analytical procedures, and control measures. The program is treated as one in the appraisal and control of dusts and fumes. The fact that the material is radioactive introduces certain new details, but this does not make the problem basically different from others in the field o… more

Radioactive contamination in the environs of the Hanford Works for the period January, February, March 1949

Description: This report summarizes in somewhat more detail than the monthly H.I. Environs reports the extent and magnitude of the radioactive contamination detected in the environs of the Hanford Works. Radioactive contamination resulting from the operation of the Hanford Works as well as that found occurring in natural quantities is included. This belated report is being issued merely for the records to serve as a composite summary of measurements already reported in the monthly H.I. Environs reports and … more

Nitric acid recovery and ammonia removal: Modifications to the Redox dissolver off-gas systems

Description: Project CG-588 authorized the design and construction of dissolver and waste neutralizer off-gas scrubbers to remove the ammonia given off during coating removal and waste neutralization steps of the Redox operation. It has always been recognized that the nitrogen oxides in the dissolver off-gases, resulting from the dissolution of bare uranium slugs, could also be absorbed in water under proper conditions to give re-useable nitric acid. Consequently it appeared feasible to provide facilities w… more

Special filter samples of Hanford process effluent gases

Description: This document contains information on special filter samples of Hanford Process Effluent Gases. The filters are identified by code numbers only. Included in this paper are tables explaining the sample code numbers, sampling locations, and process conditions during sampling. Also included, is a copy of the monthly and quarterly average results for Regional Monitoring's routine stack program for the fourth quarter of 1956.

Control of radio-iodine emissions from the separations plants

Description: The release of radio-iodine from the irradiated uranium during dissolution, and the emission of a portion of this radio-iodine to the environs via the separations plant stacks continues to be a problem in spite of the expenditure of several million dollars for equipment designed to remove the radio-iodine from the gaseous wastes. This report discusses the control of the radio-iodine emissions from the hanford separation processes.(JL)

A field method using uranine to measure penetration of high-efficiency filters

Description: A method has been developed to field test high-efficiency air cleaning filters to measure their efficiency in removing aerosols from contaminated air streams. In certain instances, the efficiency of air cleaning filters may be measured prior to installation. For example, high-efficiency filters of the absolute'' type are measured for their efficiency of removal of a 0.3 micron dioctylphthalate aerosol from an air stream prior to use at AEC installations. However, defects may occur during or fol… more

Analysis and testing the performance of a centrifugal two phase flow separator

Description: Analysis and testing the performance of an 8 in., 1.72 ft high centrifugal cyclone separator for flows up to 4.0 lbs/s and pressures ranging from 10 to 60 psig. Conclusions drawn are based on inlet steam qualities of 23 to 27 percent (x% = m/sub s//m /sub t/) .99% and better steam quality is achieved up to 3 lbs/s under 50 and 60 psig. Breakdown flow rate is found to be a linear function of separator pressure.
