Resonance Scattering of Neutrons by Mn55

Description: Abstract: Although we are generally interested in nuclear resonance levels, our measurements on Mn55 (naturally occurring Mn is 100 percent Mn55) were undertaken in order to corroborate Goldhaber's discovery of an extremely large scattering by this element.

Magnetic Field Measurements by Nuclear Resonance

Description: Abstract: The purpose of this report is to outline the work done at the Radiation Laboratory toward the development of a magnetic field measuring device using the phenomenon of nuclear resonance. While the work described here is far from complete, it has served to indicate the limitations of the method as well as some of its possibilities. For reasons which will become apparent, the project is being discontinued. It is hoped that this report will serve as a starting point should the work be… more

Temperature and Phase Effects on the Photolysis of Ethyl Iodide

Description: The elementary sieps in the photolysis of liquid ethyl iodide by light of wavelength 2537 A by determining initial rates of iodine production in the presence.of added iodine and hydrogen iodide were analyzed at 25 and --70 d C to get information on the activation energies of competing elementary reaciions. Investigations were also made of the effects of additives on the photolysis of glassy ethyl iodide at --180 d C, and evidence for the formation of trapped radicals during photolysis and radio… more

RADIOISOTOPE AND RADIATION APPLICATIONS. Quarterly Progress Report

Description: Results of the final dynamic experiments with the ironremoval process model using Fe/sup 59/ indicated that the intrinsic-radiotracer method is rapid, accurate, and suitable for continuous readout. Results from both static and dynamic experiments on the use of Mn/sup 54/ to aid in removing manganese from process water indicated that intrinsic radiotracers can be used to help remove low-concentration critical impurities. One phase of the hazards evaluation was concerned with the ingestion of rad… more

MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF INSULATORS. Quarterly Report No. 1, Covering Period February 15, 1961 to May 15, 1961

Description: The magnetic properties of color centers were studied to obtain information regarding electron traps in insulators. Experiments designed to determine the equation governing the recovery of resonance after saturation were carried out. Relatively large samples were prepared by the method of additive coloration. KCl and RbCl crystals were used. Resonance saturation as a function of concentration was investigated and no significant dependence found. Measurements of the unsaturated susceptibility we… more

The Sideband Technique In A Variable Frequency NMR Spectrometer

Description: The purpose of this Note is to point out the advantages of the sideband technique over the derivative method in wideline NMR spectroscopy. In the sideband technique the absorption spectrum is recorded directly and the modulation amplitude is no longer a determining factor in the resolution.

Magnetic Properties of Insulators. Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering Period May 15, 1961 to August 15, 1961

Description: The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of color centers in additively colored KCl crystals is measured to observe the effects of optical bleaching at room temperature. Earlier measurements on the F-center are confirmed and the susceptibility is measured at 78 and 300 deg K over five decades of power, including the very low power region. The width and the saturation properties of the individual multiplets are studied in detail and the technique of making E PR measurements on inhomogeneously b… more

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Line Shapes Resulting From the Combined Effects of Nuclear Quadrupole and Anisotropic Shift Interactions. I. Theory

Description: From introduction: "A nuclear quadrupole interaction may occur simultaneously in conjunction with an anisotropic magnetic shift in a variety of solids. The non-cubic pure metals, in particular the hexagonal close-packed ones, afford a considerable number of examples, some which have already been studied. Among the latter may be listed Ga, In, and Te, and the list of possibilities must include Ti, Zr, Hf, Lu, Sc, and La, and perhaps others. Nuclear magnetic resonances in intermetallic compounds … more

Tables and Graphs for Computing Debye-Waller Factors in Mossbauer Effect Studies

Description: A table of functions is presented that simplifies the evaluation of the Debye-Waller factor which gives the fraction of recoil-free gamma ray processes in Mbssbauer effect studies. A graph of the recoil-free fraction, f, as a function of the ratio of the Debye temperature to the crystal temperature for selected recoil energy to Debye temperature ratios is included for rapid estimation of f.
