Improved poultry house

Description: The relationship of energy and poultry production was explored in three areas: methane production from litter, broiler house insulation, and broiler house HVAC systems. The findings show that while a methane plant would not be popular with individual American poultry producers; the pay back in fuel and fertilizer, if the plant was located in close proximinity to the processing plant, would be favorable. Broiler house insulation has been dramatically improved since the outset of this study. Pres… more

Studies of helical conductor models for superconducting ac power transmission

Description: In the BNL concept of a superconducting ac power transmission cable the conductors are made of Nb/sub 3/Sn tapes wound helically on cylinders. Recently, it was decided to make each conductor in the form of a double layer winding in which the layers are of opposite helicity. This reduces undesirable consequences of axial flux generation. After reviewing the considerations which lead to the double helix conductor, experiments with short models (0.8 m long) are described. Results are given for ac … more

Dynamic load model study for overhead transmission lines. Final report, November 1975--September 1976

Description: A study was undertaken to examine by scale models the dynamic longitudinal loadings on flexible transmission structures. In the course of the investigation certain new concepts have also been developed concerning the elements of a transmission line system which contributes to the local flexibility of individual structures. Further, new methods of analysis were devised for the future use by designers in this field. These model test results have demonstrated that it is possible to simulate a numb… more

High voltage research (breakdown strengths of gaseous and liquid insulators). First quarterly report, period ending June 30, 1976

Description: Two experimental breakdown apparatuses have been constructed in sequence; the first has provided initial data and lessons for improvement in the second. Breakdown strength measurements have been made for a number of unitary and multicomponent gaseous insulators which were chosen on the basis of physical knowledge concerning their interactions with slow electrons. Most of the systems studied were found to have much better breakdown strengths than SF/sub 6/. For example, the breakdown strengths o… more

Development of an improved extruded dielectric cable rated 230 kV

Description: Work performed on developing an improved 230 kV extruded solid dielectric cable, the techniques of jointing such cables and the testing of terminations suitable for operation at that voltage level are described. Difficulties were encountered during manufacture in applying the semi-conducting extruded conductor shield. A new higher melt point compound solved the problem. Superconducting cable system. Summary report, November 1971--August 1975

Description: In the opinion of EPRI and ERDA this 46 month program to develop an ac super-conducting power transmission line was unsuccessful in meeting most of its specific objectives. The technical and economic problems pursued are outlined. Unforeseen difficulties were encountered with power losses in the superconducter, eddy current losses, and heat leak. Fault current testing was never attempted. Major dielectric problems were encountered preventing operation of this system at 138 kV. Ac loss data on s… more

Design, manufacture, test and delivery of a 230 kV extruded irradiated crosslinked polyethylene cable. Final report

Description: A project was initiated to develop a 230 kV solid dielectric cable for use in underground transmission. The dielectric is to be polyethylene, crosslinked by electron bombardment. Compared to the more conventional chemically crosslinked polyethylene, the irradiated cable is expected to contain less sensitive defects and thus be more suitable for a 230 kV rating. A toroidally shaped diode was developed to provide a uniform radiation dose to a thick-walled coaxial cable. The diode is to receive an… more

Polymeric films for use on superconducting power transmission cables

Description: Research on the development of electrical insulation for a flexible, helium-cooled superconducting cable for a 138 kV underground power transmission system is reported. Solid, polyethylene or polypropylene tapes were found to best satisfy dielectric requirements. The antioxidant was found to be the major source of dielectric loss at 100 Hz and 4.2/sup 0/K, and the selection of the proper type and concentration of antioxidant kept tan delta within design limits. Acceptable values of yield streng… more
