Electronic Structure of the Heaviest Elements

Description: All of the available evidence leads to the view that the 5f electron shell is being filled in the heaviest elements giving rise to a transition series which begins with actinium in the same sense that the rare earth or 'lanthanide' series begins with lanthanum. Action and Emission Spectra of the Luminescence of Green PlantMaterials

Description: The action and emission spectra of the delayed light emission from Chlorella, Nostoc, and spinach chloroplasts have been measured. The action spectra for Chlorella and for spinach chloroplasts are quite similar to the absorption spectra of these materials. The action spectrum for Nostoc, on the other hand, shows a relatively low activity for chlorophyll and carotenoids and a high activity for phycocyanin. High-Energy Beta Decay of Light Elements

Description: The beta decay of the radioactive members of the mass-eight and -twelve triads has been studied with a spiral-orbit spectrometer having a 1.3% resolution. The end point, half-life and log-ft values respectively are: for N{sup 12}, 16.37 {+-} 0.06 MeV, 11.43 {+-} 0.05 milliseconds, and 4.17; for B{sup 12}, 13.40 {+-} 0.05 MeV, 20.6 {+-} 0.2 msec and 4.11; for B{sup 8}, 14 MeV (broad), 0.75 {+-} 0.02 sec, and 5.72; and for Li{sup 8}, 13 Mev (broad), 0.87 {+-} 0.01 sec, and 5.67. The Energy Gap in Nuclear Matter

Description: The magnitude of the energy gap in nuclear matter associated with a highly correlated ground state of the type believed to be important in the theory of superconductivity has been evaluated theoretically. Description: The nuclear radiations of nuclides: U{sup 233}, Pu{sup 239}, Bk{sup 243}, Bk{sup 244}, Bk{sup 245}, Bk{sup 246}, Bk{sup 249}, Cf{sup 249}, and Fm{sup 255} were investigated with high-resolution spectrometers. The LCAO-MO Study of the Thermochromism of Bianthrone

Description: An LCAO-MO calculation of the energies of the states of bianthrone with the anthracene ring systems respectively coplanar and perpendicular indicates that the latter state should be more energetic than the former state by about 3.3 kcal. This compares quite favorably with the experimental data of Grubb et al. which show that the thermally excited state of bianthrone observed in the phenomenon of thermochromism is more energetic than the ground state by 3.5 kcal.

Liquid and crystalline neutron matter

Description: From sixth Texas symposium on relativistic astrophysics; New York, New York, USA (18 Dec 1972). Results of calculations of the ground-state energies of liquid and crystalline neutron matter are presented. It is found that neutron matter will crystallize at a density near normal nuclear density. Proposal for an Experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory Nuclear Levels as Analyzers of High Energy Interactions

Description: We propose to study diffractive phenomena caused by 100 BeV pions, using a new technique, which consists in associating with the high energy interaction, the detection of photons resulting from the de-excitation of nuclear levels. Calculations of the ground state energy and exchange integrals of crystalline $sup 3$He

Description: Thesis. The variational equation is derived and discussed using Jastrowtype wave functions, which are a product of pair wave functions, as the trail wave function. The various approximations used in simplifying the variational equations so as to obtain a form that is possible to solve numerically are discussed also. A Monte Carlo calculation is described using the wave function obtained. Exchange in /sup 3/He is discussed. (MHR)

Non-relativistic current algebra in the N/V limit

Description: The case of a noninteracting infinite Bose gas at zero temperature is studied in the formalism of local current algebras, using the representation theory of nuclear Lie groups.
