Theory of Final State Interactions

Description: Using requirements of analyticity and the unitarity of the S-matrix we obtain the dependence of a transition amplitude on the invariant mass of two particles strongly coupled to other two particle channels. As an example, we consider the production of a Σπ state near the Y*₀ resonance assuming it is coupled to a KN state in an s 1/2 state.

Observation of muonless neutrino-induced inelastic interactions

Description: The observation of inelastic interactions induced by high energy neutrinos and antineutrinos in which no muon is observed in the final state is reported. A possible, but by no means unique, interpretation of this effect is the existence of a neutral weak current. (auth)

Deck model calculation of $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ $pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$p

Description: A Deck-like model for the reaction pi /sup -/p yields pi /sup -/ pi / sup +/ pi /sup -/p is formulated and studied. The model differs from previous Deck calculations in two respects: i) experimental data are used for both pi pi and pi N scattering, and ii) the amplitude has proper Bose symmetry. Feature i) allows one to examine any desired region of 3 pi mass (the A/sub 3/ is treated on the same footing as the A/sub 1/); features i) and ii) allow one to examine all the angular dependence in the… more

Search for backwards produced exotic meson resonances and study of particle spectra and mass distributions in the reaction. pi. /sup +/ + P. -->. n (forward) + X/sup + +/ at 8. 4 GeV/c. [Upper limits, G parity, 8. 4 GeV/c]

Description: Results are reported from a hybrid experiment designed to search for backwards produced I = 2 exotic meson resonances by investigating the backward scattering reactions: ..pi../sup +/ + p ..-->.. in (forward) + ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/, ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..pi../sup -/, and p anti p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/ at an incident pion momentum of 8.4 GeV/c. The SLAC 15'' rapid cycling bubble chamber, … more

Neutron spectra from 647- and 800-MeV proton bombardment of hydrogen and deuterium. [Cross sections]

Description: Zero degree neutron spectra for the inclusive reactions p(p,n) and d(p,n) were obtained. Spectra were obtained for bombarding proton kinetic energies of 647 and 800 MeV. The strongly peaked p(p,n) spectra are well explained via the p(p,n)p..pi../sup +/ reaction primarily through the production of the N*/sub 33/(..delta../sup + +/) resonance. However, there is evidence for n-p final state interactions as well. Calculations have shown the roles of the N*/sub 33/ resonance and the n-p final state … more

Study of the neutral meson spectrum near 1000 MeV

Description: The nonstrange neutral meson spectrum from 0.75 to 1.23 GeV/c was studied in the reaction negative pion plus proton goes to neutron plus missing mass at incident beam momenta of 1.98 and 2.41 GeV/c. Neutrons produced by beam interactions in the liquid hydrogen target were detected in the near forward direction in an array of plastic scintillation counters. The missing mass of the remaining particles produced in the final state was determined by a measurement of the neutron time-of-flight. In th… more

Molecular effects in inner-shell photoabsorption shape resonances and EXAFS. [Multiple scattering model]

Description: With few exceptions, inner-shell photoabsorption spectra of molecules exhibit strong shape resonances near threshold, weak fine structure extending far into the continuum, or both. The main characteristics of these one-electron effects are established by reviewing selected experimental data. Then recent calculations are described based on the multiple-scattering model which show in detail how these effects are caused by the anisotropic molecular field, which mixes high-l partial-wave components… more

Photon spectrum in pion capture on tritium

Description: The photon spectrum from the pion capture reaction ..pi../sup -/ + t ..-->.. 3n + ..gamma.. was measured with a high-resolution pair-spectrometer to study the A = 3 system in a pure T = 3/2 state. The measured branching ratio (..pi../sup -/t ..-->.. nn..gamma..)/(..pi../sup -/t ..-->.. nnn..gamma.. or nnn) is 4.5 +- 0.8 percent. The shape of the photon spectrum is in satisfactory agreement with theoretical calculations which include final state interactions among the three neutrons. No evidence… more

Proton--proton interactions at 200 and 300 GeV/c

Description: The reactions pp $Yields$ pp $pi$$sup +$pi$sup -$ and pp $Yields$ pp$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ at 200 and 300 GeV/c were investigated using the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber and downstream wide-gap spark chambers. This analysis is based upon approximately 9500 4- pronged and 6-pronged events. The cross sections were consistent with pomeron dominance for these reactions. The final state pp $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$ is dominated by single diffractive dissociation, whose … more
