THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI

Description: Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F{sub n}({phi}/{phi}{sub o}) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear … more

TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF TAFEL SLOPE IN THE FORMATION OF VERY THIN ANODIC OXIDE FILMS ON NIOBIUM

Description: A kinetic study was made of the formation of very thin anodic oxide films on niobium at constant current over the temperature range --10 to 70 deg C. Formation voltages were limited to the range below the oxygen evolution potential to eliminate possible interaction of an electronic component of the current with the measured formation field. It was found that the measured temperature dependence of Tafel slope agreed with that predicted by the theory of Mott and Cabrera. Using this theory, a zero… more

Results of Beam Inflection Tests

Description: "An experimental study has been made regarding the passage of a beam of 100-kV ions (H⁺ and H₂⁺) across a magnetic field by means of a crossed electric field." This experiment was designed to answer the following questions: "(1) Is there a limit to the current that will traverse a magnetic field by the action of a crossed electric field? If so, what is the limit? (2) Do difficulties arise in maintaining the electric field? (3) For the source employed, what is the angular divergence and current … more

Research and Investigation Leading to Methods of Generating and Detecting Radiation in the 100 to 1000 Micron Wavelength Range of the Spectrum. Quarterly Progress Report No. 7 for September 1, 1957 to December 1, 1957

Description: The problem of feeding a pulsed megnetron into a high Q (greater than 10,000) circuit was solved by incorporating a high power ferrite isolator into the appropriate microwave circuit. The PACE analogde computer has been programmed, and curves of particles displacement and velocity have been computed for field strengths from 50 to 500 kv/ cm and injection velocities ranging from 0.24 to 0.40c. Analysis of the slow-wave, dielectric, higher order mode resonator included the computation of the TE m… more

HRP-CP: Conclusions Concerning the Predicted Behavior of Insoluble Corrosion and Fission Products in the HRT

Description: Information available from HRP-CP development studies was summarized amd used as a basis for predicting the probable behavior of corrosion and fission product solids in the HRT and its associated chemical processing plant. Operation of the chemical plant will probably limit the HRT circulating solids concentration to between 10 and 100 ppm; quantitative predictions are uncertain due to uncertainties concerning the charaeteristics of reactor solids and the effects of rcactor geometries.
