[Voertman's interior]

Description: Photograph of Voertman's interior viewed from the entrance. In the image five people, three females and two males, sit at the counter top while a woman on the other side stands in front of a cash register. In the background people sit in booths talking among themselves. The entire frame is filled with objects ranging from books to shirts to drugstore items. A staircase in the back leads up another area filled with more books.

Interval Between Pulses of Counter or Scaler

Description: This paper is based off of an operation of a recording tape scaler, which records pulses from a counter or scaler upon a tape as a function of time. With the recording tape scaler, the interval between pulses of counter or scaler is measured in this report.

Report on a Differential Ionization Chamber

Description: From abstract: "A chamber was constructed with three electrodes dividing the space into two regions of 800 c.c. The surfaces of one of these were coated with boron carbide. With opposite potentials on two electrodes, ion currents to the collecting electrode due to gamma rays were practically cancelled and ion currents due to alpha rays induced by slow neutrons were measured."

Alpha Particle Detection and the A. C. Operated Detector "A" (Howler)

Description: Abstract: This discussion concerns the operation, construction, and servicing of an alpha rate meter of medium sensitivity (30,000 alpha particles full scale per minute) and good stability. The instrument is equipped with an oscillator which increases both in frequency and loudness as the alpha activity is increased. The oscillator circuit includes an anticipator which causes a change in frequency depending directly upon the rate of change of alpha activity. Maximum sensitivity is approximately… more

The Beta-Gamma Hand and Foot Counters

Description: Abstract: This is basically a counting rate meter, with an alarm circuit, operating from four GM tubes as the detecting elements. The Hand Counter comprises four logarithmic counting rate meters working from four GM tubes mounted individually, with associated electronic circuits, in suitable shields with a metal mesh type of window. Both sides of both hands are sampled simultaneously. In the Foot Counter, two GM tubes are separately and mounted in a suitable mesh window shielded with the el… more

The Quantitative Estimation of the Activity of Beta Particle Emitters

Description: From abstract: "In estimating the activities of β-emitting materials used in the Biology Section, most measurements were made with Geiger-Mueller counters, although Lauritsen electroscopes were used in early work. All samples were mounted on flat porcelain capsules."

RADIOCARBON FROM PILE GRAPHITE CHEMICAL METHODS FOR ITS CONCENTRATIONS

Description: Samples of pile graphite, irradiated in a test-hole at Hanford for 15 months, have been assayed for radioactive C{sup14}, yielding 0.38 ± 0.04 microcuries per gram. At this level of activity, the pile graphite contains very valuable amounts of C{sup14}. The relation between the above assay and the probable average assay of pile graphite is discussed, and it is concluded that the latter is almost certainly above 0.3 uc/ gram. Controlled oxidation of this graphite, either with oxygen at ~ 750°C, … more

A Fast Coincidence Circuit with Pulse Height Selection

Description: Abstract: The output signal of a linear accelerator may have a rise time of 1-2 x 10[minus]7 seconds. Therefore, the output of a pulse height selector operating on this signal has a variation of delay from the original signal of about this amount. In the instrument to be described in this technical report this difficulty is largely resolved.

Modified Simpson Methane Flow Proportional Alpha Counter and Fission Counter

Description: Abstract: This technical report consists of series of drawings of the instrument with the following explanation. The modification of the Simpson Methane flow proportional counter consists of a means for inserting and replacing samples into the chamber through an air-lock device which avoids the introduction of even a small quantity of air into the active volume of the chamber. This is accompanied by sweeping out the small volume of the air-lock containing the sample with methane gas before the… more

Proton Angular Distribution for 90 Mev Neutron-proton Scattering

Description: The angular distribution of the recoil protons in neutron-proton scattering at 90 Mev has been measured for angles between 5{sup o} and 65{sup o} from the direction of the neutron beam. The neutrons were produced by stripping 190 Mev deuterons in a 1/2 inch Be target in the 184-inch F.M. cyclotron. R. Serber has calculated the neutron energy distribution; it has a peak at 90 Mev and a half width of 27 Mev. This distributiQn has been checked experimentally for the neutrons by Wilson Powell and b… more

Results of Some Statistical Tests of Particle Detectors

Description: Abstract: The value of routine statistical tests of counter performance in the field has been investigated. The necessity for more elaborate statistical tests than those now used at the Hanford Works has not been indicated by this work.

N-17, A Delayed Neutron Emitter

Description: The decay scheme of a 4.2 second neutron emitter has been investigated in detail. Chemical and physical evidence shows that it is N{sup 17}, which emits beta rays to a broad excited state of O{sup 17}, which then breaks up into a neutron plus O{sup 16}. The energy spectrum of the neutrons is determined by measuring the energies of the O{sup 16} recoils in a proportional counter. The neutrons have a most probable energy of 0.9 Mev, a 'half width' of less than .5 Mev, and an upper limit of about … more

Electronics progress report, December 1--31, 1948

Description: Equipment and supplies are being packed for moving to Mound Laboratory. Work was started on the development of a cathode-follower circuit to match a B-wall tube to its connecting cable. The final report and maintenance manual for the scaler-multiplier are almost finished. The 10 millivolt Speedomax recorder used by Group 3 in the study of electrodeposition potentials has been replaced with a 150 millivolt Speedomax, utilizing two recording points for simultaneous recording of radioactive deposi… more

Limitations and past applications of the cloud chamber

Description: The cloud chamber is a means of observing the path of ionizing radiation. It does not reveal the radiation directly, but gives a visible trail of the path along which the radiation has traveled. The trail is formed by vapor condensing upon pairs of ions remaining after an ionizing particle has passed through the medium. The mutual interaction among rays, atoms, nuclei, and particles, can be studied and measured with the aid of vapor trails. Measurements of changes in direction and range as reco… more
