The Reduction of Uranium Trioxide by Ethyl Alcohol

Description: Abstract: The effect of temperature upon the rate of reduction of uranium trioxide by ethyl alcohol has been investigated, and a comparison of the reactivity of the dioxide produced at various temperatures has been made. The percent of carbon in the end product has been studied with respect to both temperature of reduction and length of exposure to alcohol. Optimum conditions for the reduction have been suggested.

Separation of Iron and Tuballoy With Phthallic Acid

Description: Introduction: This report embodies the results of an investigation as to the possibility of removing the bulk of the iron from gunk solutions of various concentrations by precipitation of the iron with phthallic acid and subsequent precipitation of tuballoy. The method consists of dissolving the phthallic acid in the gunk solution and then adding NH₃ to a suitable pH, precipitating the iron, and leaving the tuballoy in solution.

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Description: Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.

A Solubility Method of the Determination of Non-Volatile Material in Tetrachloride Charges

Description: Abstract: "This report suggests using methyl acetate extraction of charge material as a means of determining the non-volatile residue. It is shown that the volatile constituents of charge material are all extremely soluble in methyl acetate whereas the non-volatile materials are quite insoluble. Percent NVH on several samples of charge material by this method are reported and discussed."

Stabilizer for Temperature Control Equipment

Description: From abstract: "A simple electronic circuit is described, the use of which greatly improves the temperature regulations obtainable with Beta equipment. The circuit utilizes the time derivative of the temperature to counteract oscillation and overshoot. No other changes are required in existing equipment for installation of the stabilizer."

Studies on Cell Division, 1. Alpha Radiation as a Division Inhibiting Agent

Description: Report discussing a study aimed at learning about cell division and the effects of radiation alpha radiation on the process of cell division. This was done by correlating changes in the biochemical state of cells and the inhibition of cell division. Materials and methods are included as well as experimental results and data.

Studies on the Electrolytic Reduction of Nitric Acid

Description: Report discussing the reduction of nitric acid that results from its use at the cathode for the electrolysis of uranyl nitrate. From introduction: "It is the purpose of this report to give the results of studies on the reduction of nitric acid of different concentrations, at different types of electrodes, and for various current densities in order to ascertain the effects of such changes."

Theoretical Consideration of the Geometrical Structure of the Uranium Halides

Description: Abstract: The geometrical structure of the uranium halides has been studied from a theoretical viewpoint. This theoretical consideration tends to indicate that the pentavalent uranium halides are geometrically but not energetically capable of existence except as double halide compounds of hexavalent and tetravalent uranium.

A Thermal Type Flow Meter for Low Flow Rates of Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid

Description: Report discussing a thermal type flow meter which was adapted for metering anydrous hydrofluoric acid at low flow rates. Corrosive gases, which are not appropriate for handling in standard type rotameters or orifice meters, are also suitable for this thermal type flow meter.
